So the major downer on my future SBS/SBR aspirations was finding out that I have to get ATF approval to go interstate with the things. Most of what I've read would suggest that the only real solution is to preplan your trips.

In Googling for "ATF 5320 approval time" I came across this:

[...]Now,, get your 5320.20's for every state you "think" you might go to, date them for 01-01-2010 to 12-31-2010, "travel back and forth to [insert state of choice] during 2010".... print them all up, staple the dupes together,, and stick them in a 9x12 envelope.[...]

Is this actually possible?

Sweet. So I can, in fact, just mail or fax a 5320 in once a year? That's significantly less hassle than the "ATF requires specific dates" that I've gotten from most other sources.

Before you go traveling make sure you have checked the states you are traveling to and through. Some states may be Title II friendly, but require you to be a "licensed Dealer or Collector". I ran into that when I tried to take my SBRs to a "supposedly" Tilte II friendly neighboring state. I ended up getting my C&R. That qualified me as a "Registered Collector" for interstate transport into the neighboring state.

Also, if you fax your 5320 make sure you get the return fax with the approval stamp on it. The NFA will snail mail you a copy with the "approved" stamp as well.
