My brother lives in the country and has a really long drive way but the entrance of the drive way is right off of a county highway. So i was wondering if it was legal to shoot at the beginning of his drive way. Maybe if we were in a back of a pick up truck that would be better.

You mean as in shooting from a moving vehicle? This is highly illegal on a public road BUT, traffic laws do not apply on private property. Just like speed limits. He could build drag strip or race track if he had enough room.

You mean stand at the junction of the highway and driveway and shoot towards the property? Some places have laws on shooting from public highways. CT, for example, has a $100 fine IIRC. IL is probably worse, looking at your other firearm laws.

And there are easements and set-backs along every state & federal highway.

Besides that, wouldn't your brothers house be at the other end of the driveway from the end you would be shooting from??

Most areas I have have gone shooting have ordnances that say how far you need to be away from highways and other public roads. I don't think it matters weather its public or private land. If your propriety runs right up to the public road and your in that distance I do believe you could get nailed with a citation.

I Georgia you must be 50 yards from a road or structure. Here it would be legal to set up a shooting bench 50 yards from the edge of the road and shoot at a backstop away from the road. Check the laws where you live.

Yeah, there's definitely enough information to render an opinion.

You're shooting in the general direction of your brother's house? What's the backstop? Are there any other houses beyond your brother's? Are there trees in the target area (which are kind of fun since a lot of bullets like to bounce off trees).

Regardless, it sounds like a bad idea.
