Questions about building a safe

Not sure if this is the right area but I was wondering if any members have built their own handgun safes or have links to good information. What I can mostly find online is building safe rooms or gun closets.
Looking for more information, mostly as research for writing but also debating a safe build that would replace the mounting brackets of my passenger seat in my SUV for safing my sidearm when I can't carry it in somewhere and/or to house my SBR permanently.

Building your own safe is a cool project.
However; if ya scrounge around,
you can usually find used safes for less than you'd pay for the materials to build one.

For your vehicle;
you might check into getting a small cash drop/depository, plate steel, 'B' rate safe.
These can be bolted to the floor.
For about the same price as some sheet metal box marketed as 'gun safe',
you could get a 1/8th inch plate 'B' rate with a half inch thick door & frame and a high security lock.
Some delivery trucks use these so the driver doesn't have to carry a pocket full of cash from the COD deliverys they make.
They're about the size of a mailbox, or a little bigger, and easy to mount out of sight.

Since you have an SUV you might have room to mount this under a seat. I know one customer that made brackets to mount it to the front of the drivers seat rails so it slides when the seat is adjusted and he reaches down between his legs to get to it. It was mounted vertically and positioned right under his legs. Seem like it could also be mounted horizontally and sit mostly under the seat if it is wide enough.

How's this project coming?

Something that dawned on me while driving down the road:

As far as locking up a handgun in your vehicle-
A $5. USGI surplus ammo can is about as 'tough' as any 'car gun safe'.

With a little creativity---
You could probably figure out how to drill a few holes in it & bolt it to the floor,
and maybe even put a hardware store hasp & lock on it too.

That way:
Until the ultimate Engineering marvel, or a 'car gun safe';
made in sheet metal about as thick as the AC ducts on your house came along-
for about $250-

A bolted down ammo can, with a $3. hasp & Master Padlock would get ya through the day.
And if your're smart enough to throw a dirty 'T' shirt, towel, or jacket over it-
None of the wandering heathens and savages would even know it was there.
