What do you do with the receipts from firearm purchases and sales?

right now all i do is to place them in a fire resistance document safe and keep a computer record of the date, model and serial number.

Ive noticed that some of the receipts are starting to fade, would photocopies be good enough for records or should i start to laminate them as soon as i get them?

also if I sell a gun to an FFL how long should i keep the receipt from that sale?

thanks for the help guys!

I buy all my guns private sale I don't have receipts for any of my guns,I seem to be doing fine.

How about a document scanner on your computer?

What do you need the receipt for?

Keep it for a week to make sure the gun isn't defective, and then throw it out... (Even then, chances are the receipt wouldn't do any good - a lot of gun stores are kind of shady that way.)

Ive been told by more than a few lawyers from my area that suggested it and never got around to asking why but have made it a habit.

If you have a receipt, you might as well keep it, what harm could it do to keep it? You might be able to claim the gun on your home owners ins. if there is ever a fire. Call your ins. company to find out.

College student, parents are somewhat anti so im lucky to even be able to have the guns in the house, they wouldnt let me claim them if there was damage

Not if they're the ones paying the premiums on that insurance. If they already don't like guns, why would they feel good about paying for insurance that would cover the loss of guns?

I'm not exactly positive about what insurance he has, I know ALLSTATE considers it just another piece of property in the home, claimable. They would claim the rest of the property in the house (as stated in post above, a fire) So their premium is going to go up regardless due to them claiming the house and property inside.

OP said he puts his receipts in a fire resistant safe, as he is obviously worried about a fire. A theft I can see not claiming on, but again, I was talking about a fire.

im not worried about a fire, just happen to have all of my important documents in the same place because i can be forgetful if i place things elsewhere

judging by the responses, i dont need to worry if the receipts are fading
