The VZ 58 is going to be my next rifle purchase. I was looking at the CZ USA models. They have the wood impregnated and skeletonized version. Are the stocks interchangable between models? If I buy a skeletonized version, can I buy a wood stock later for it? Should I skip CZ USA models and look at Czechpoint USA? Or are there any other quality manufacturers out there? Thanks.

Yes, the stocks are interchangeable.

Don't worry about which one to buy, they're all made in the same plant in former Czechoslovakia, but have been imported by several different folks (which may be cause for the confusion).

Just don't buy a Century job.

As mentioned the stocks are interchangeable, and technically what you are getting is a Cz 858 which is the semi version. The Vz 58 has the happy switch, and as such isnt available in the US from what little I know. Which isnt very much. :)

CZ discontinued selling the VZ 58 in 2010 however as mentioned, the same rifle, which is built by D-Technic in Moravia, Czech Republic, is available through czechpoint-usa.com.

Technically, the 858 is illegal in the USA, as it's got a "full auto receiver".

The US-bound Vz58s have completely new production receivers, designed expressly for the US market.

Oops, forgot to mention, right now there are several dealer distributors dumping the CZ58's(D-T) for about $150 LESS than normal dealer pricing....if you keep your eyes open, you may find a dealer willing to pass on the savings.

Have to echo nalioth and Uncle Mike on this one...do NOT buy CAI (it even rhymes :D). You may want to give TGI a call to see if they have any left, I bought my D-Technik build for sub-$600 from them a while back and positively love it.

P.S.: After you pick one up make sure and join the VZ.58 club here.

:)

Thanks for the info guys. If I find an inexpensive folder can I put the fixed stock on it? I just want to know what my options are going to be? What online dealers/manufactures sell the most accessories?

Sure can...best thing you can do is forget everything you know about AKs...it may look like one (well kind of, at least in silhouette) but they are nothing like one another. To the best of my knowledge all parts (receivers, bolts, stocks, et al) are interchangeable.

Czechpoint-USA is pretty much the sole supplier for parts, save for magazines. Just remember that 922r is still in effect, and choose parts accordingly.
