I have a Colt, 36 caliber, 5 shot, conversion, 4 1/2 inch octagon barrel with stagecoach scene on cylinder. Pat. 1871 and 1872. All serial numbers match (435), so it must have come from factory this way. The bore looks like it hasn't been cleaned in many years. My questions are, should I clean the entire gun and /or just the bore. Any ideas of value? It has been in the family since probably new.

Sounds like a `62 Pocket Navy and many were made as factory cartridge conversions without a cutout in the barrel for front loading of roundballs. No idea as to value. Can you post a picture?

CraigC called it (or at least what I would offer) Pocket Navy converted by Colt, hence the second date.

Photos would be nice.

Clean it all, but don't go hog wild on the finish, just get it clean leaving the patina as is. Check out the link, scroll down about half way to the 3" Colt Conversion they show... yours look like that but with the longer barrel? Or no?

Value? Depends on finish, hence photo request. Could be $200 up to ?

Responce to CraigC and Baba Louie

Here are the pictures of my Colt. It does look like the Pocket .36 Navy Revolver shown in Baba Louie's attachment, except that mine has a 4 1/2 inch barrel. Thanks for the advice and info.
