So recently (when I bought a black powder pistol) I've been getting more and more interested in single action shooting. I found out about SASS from a friend of mine and wanted to know a few things.
1. How is the competition structured.
2. What type of guns should I be looking to get (I already want 2 single action cattlemen from Uberti, and A Henry repeating rifle. is there anything else I might want to look at)
3. What type of gear should I get (I know it needs to be period style clothing and holsters)
Finally I would like to say that I've never competed before so that might be why these questions sound kinda silly.

Thank you in advanced

CAS is action shooting, each stage is different and has a dramatic scenario setting out why you are shooting at those rustlers, etc. Targets are nearly always steel at close to moderate range, scored by ear and eye. Your score is your time from Go to the last shot plus five seconds per miss.

You must have two single action revolvers and a lever action rifle in pistol caliber. It doesn't have to be the same as your sixguns but that is convenient. Just no .30-30, etc.
You must also have a shotgun. It can be a double barrel, either hammer or hammerless, but with no ejectors. Or you can shoot a Winchester Model 97 pump or copy thereof.

As to rigs and clothes, there are a lot of pictures on the net and gunzines.
You don't have to be fancy, plain jeans, work shirt, hat, and boots will get you started.

You will be made welcome at any SASS meeting or shoot. You can see the gear first hand and probably be invited to try it out.

Hey Pard,
go to sassnet.com and you can find just about all the info you will need. Look for the sass clubs and find the ones near you and GO. Let the RO know that you are new and would like to try the game. Most likely you will have to beat people off trying to loan you equpt to try. The most fun you can have short of a time machine.. Marshall Mudrock SASS #63238

Go to www.sassnet.com and click on "SASS Clubs", then click on your state and find a local club. You should find contact info for the club contact. Send that person an email or give them a call and tell then you are interested. I bet you'll be taken by the hand.

Here's what we tell folks at my club. Don't buy anything. If you have some ammo, bring it (lead bullets only, maybe a box of shotgun shells). Don't worry about clothing. Just come to the match.

In some clubs they offer a new shooter's clinic or a practice day periodically. You can ask about that.

There's loads of stuff you can read or watch on the web but there's nothing like coming to a match. If you start reading about SASS categories and rules it is easy to get overwhelmed. Don't worry about it. Believe me, it makes sense when you see it all "on the ground".

You will find cowboys shooters to be a great bunch. The shooting is fun, too.

Thanks for all the advice. I will deffinetly plan on going to a match. The thing that sucks right now is that I'm in school and out from home till next year. Ill look near my school to see if there are any matches, my question on the gear is more to see how much to save up. I love old school firearms and always will want one. To red cent my home is in norfolk va, but as of right now I'm in blairsville pa.
