I have an AB Coltelliere Italian switchblade that I'm thinking of selling. It is a nice one (11", bone handle, damascus blade, and is in a walnut presentation box) and was quite expensive. I'm contemplating listing it on gunbroker.com and see what happens.

My questions are if I happen to sell it, are there any shipping regulations that I need to be aware of? Could it be shipped UPS or USPS? Any special markings on the box? I know they're illegal in some areas, but it would be up to the purchaser to determine if it would be legal to own it. I had it shipped direct to me from Italy via FedEx.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

You can't legally sell it to someone out of state under federal interstate commerce law unless the buyer is LE or active military nor can you send it by USPS unless those conditions are fulfilled.

As to DOT/IATA compliant markings, there aren't any. It's an item and not considered hazardous material/dangerous goods. As to BATFE shipping, they don't regulate knives so they're silent on shipping of knives (even switchblades).

From a practical standpoint, the carrier simply wants their employees to be safe in handling the package. I almost always get a pvc pipe with a large enough inner diameter to accommodate the knife and it's box with some bubble wrap around it and I seal the ends up with enough fiber tape to frustrate anyone without a sharp knife (or a saws all) from opening it. Then I drop it in a box with crushed newspaper to keep it from shifting and I package it in a cardboard box and ship it FedEx insured as tools (which a knife is).

Thanks,hso

I have made up my mind to sell it. I trust your legal judgement is sound, but there are enough others listed on gunbroker that I think the interstate regs are being ignored by all and I wouldn't be the first.

I wouldn't ship by USPS from what you've said, and besides which the UPS depot is closer to home anyway.

If anyone on this forum is interested, I'll give them "first dibs." I won't list it until next week, with a starting bid of $100 (I paid $182 for it).
