I was told not to let the charging handle slam forward on an empty chamber.
How do I check the empty chamber (to make sure its empty) without hurting the gun?

I don't buy it. Closing the bolt on an empty chamber isn't going to hurt anything. And even it if does, every part on an AR is easily replaceable so it's not a big deal.

You could just pull the charging handle back then let it ease forward slowly. I have no idea if it would hurt anything or not, but I don't let any of my semis, pistols or rifles, slam shut on an empty chamber. Why take any risk if you don't have to.

No harm. I've done it hundreds of times. Maybe thousands, maybe more.

1911s are more picky. They should close gently or use that power for stripping and loading a round.

Not a problem for AR15s; but if it concerns you you can just release with the charging handle instead of slapping the bolt release.

Use the charging handle to pull the bolt back and then slowly let it ride forward after you've verified the chamber is empty.

When the charging handle is all the way forward, lock it into place.

If you have an A1 or higher, push the forward assist to lock the bolt in place.

If you have an SP1, you can put your finger in the little groove of the bolt and push it forward. If your chamber is clean, you should be able to lock the bolt just by pushing if forward.

No, but dry firing doesn't hurt it either.
