Just picked up a N-M 91-30 to fill out my collection of WW-II rifles. In the included kit there was a jag that fits on the cleaning rod, a blued cylinder that I assume is a muzzle protector. A firing pin protrusion guage with an oblong opening on one end that resembles a 1911 bushing wrench, a smaller blued cylinder, and a copper or brass rod flattened in the middle.

What is the purpose of these items?

Thank you

the one is a muzzle protector, the oblong one is just the milti tool, the hole in it serves no purpose (I believe), the cylinder (should have a hole in it) slips over the cleaning rod (non threaded end) and the piece with the flattened portion slips through the cylinder and the cleaning rod and acts as something to hold onto, at least that what I think its all for

You are correct - these are cleaning kit pieces.

Look at the image linked here: http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/kit001a.JPG
and I'll label them for you.
The "bushing wrench" looking thing is a combo screwdriver and firing pin depth gauge.
The knurled item on the bottom right with the hole in it is the muzzle protector.
The piece above the wrench with the flat spot goes through the hole in the end of the cleaning rod and makes it easier to pull the cleaning jag through the bore.
The other blued piece next to the handle has a use I am completely unsure of.

Hope it helps.

That website (7.62x54r.net) has more than you'll ever want to know about the M-N rifle family, by the way.

Actually the oblong hole does serve a purpose. It is used to loosen or tighten a very tight bayonet that has been placed on the rifle.

GD, that would have been nice to know about 40 min ago, I was having a hell of a time getting mine off after shooting today, well now I know!
