I have a fire-rated safe for my weapons and haven't seen alot of rusting yet..... But a buddy of mine said or recommended I place a small open top container of white rice in it to collect moisture and prevent rusting.... Anyone else do this? Any opinions????

There are better products then white rice.

For one thing, how do you know it isn't already wetter when you get it then your gun safe is?

Get some silica gel with a mosture indicator on it so you know it's time to dry it in the oven.

Or get a Golden-Rod & a Rig-Rag, and a can of R.I.G. to wipe your guns down and forget rust forever.

Unless you're cheap (and I'll leave comments about Oklahomans out of this), you should do more than the rice. Get a bag of dessicant someplace, and it will absorb water. Or, you could use Damp Rid, or similar. Or, you could use a GoldenRod electric heater.

Also, I use oil as a surface coating as well as metal to metal contact. I oil heavily, not dripping, but well covered. Some of my guns smoke at the range while it burns off places, and I don't care. My carry guns are less oiled, but my guns in storage get it a lot.

So, oil and dessicant.

Look on the web at places that sell survivalist gear. I bought a big bag of them pretty cheap years ago. You can recharge them in a oven on low heat. We used the same type in the military for electronic gear. With fresh dessicant and oil on your guns you won't have to worry unless the room floods.

Remington Rechargeable dehumidifier

In my gun safe I use a Remingtion rechargeable dehumidifier and live in southwest Ohio. I purchased it from a Dick's Sporting Goods store that handle rifles. It has an indicator that changes color from Blue (dry) to light pink (wet) when the dehumidifier needs to be recharged (about 25 - 30 days). To recharge, plug into an electric outlet for about 8 hours. I have been using it for the past year.

Research GoldenRod.
Had mine for over five years now...works great.
When someone builds something better, I'll buy one.

You may need nothing at all; do you currently have a rust problem? I have guns in my vault for years and never had a rust problem. I do wipe them down with oil every 6 months or so if they are not being used.

Those closet de-humidifier buckets from Wal-Mart work like a CHARM. They are about $3.00 and last for around 4 months or so (NH USA). There is a bar level on it that shows when to replace it. They work perfectly, been using them for years now, and not a lick of rust on ANYTHING of mine.
