Hi, I have a quick question about a Mossberg 500 20g. There is an eleven year old at church who is a great kid, he always takes time for my seven year old and makes sure my son is included in all activities. Well, he has been wanting a shotgun, and with his parents permission I decided to get him one. I went to get him a Mossberg 500 20g youth model, but apparently I was not paying the most attention and ended up getting him a regular full size 20 gauge. So my question is what is the difference in size? Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Stock length and barrel length are shorter on most youth guns. Can you return/swap it for a youth gun? Mossberg calls theirs a Bantam now IIRC.

The stock length is more critical to gun fit and you should be able to get a youth stock from Mossberg, or have a gunsmith shorten the existing stock to fit properly. I'd add a premium quality recoil pad (KickEez, LimbSaver, Remington R3 etc) if I were doing the stock shortening job as well.

I have a mossberg 500c bantam. I loved having a smaller sized gun as a kid, made it much easier to handle and aim.

Recently my girlfriend has gotten into shooting and I put the youth (bantam) stock and foregrip back on and the gun fits her much better. I would say the smaller stock is about 1" shorter than the full size stock. (when you buy a bantam mossberg includes a coupon in the box with the gun that gets you 50% off the purchase of a full size stock and foregrip which is rather nice when you grow up:) )

Most of the Mossberg youth guns also have the forearm set back further so there is not so much reach to pump the gun. It centers the balance for people with less upper body strength.

Thanks for all the info, I gave him the gun and he loved it. A local gun shop is getting me a youth stock.
