I usually see these with ringed hammers but once in awhile they have a solid round hammer, I was wondering why some have solid hammers(maybe one is earlier made then the other?).
Also does anyone have any info on the steel they are made out of?
Supposedly they are 100% forged parts?
I've read a lot of positive reviews on these pistols.

Thanks

Sorry, can't help. There are a couple of review -- Google Search -- but nobody really addresses details like forged or cast, etc. The gun gets pretty good reviews, in effect calling it an "improved" BHP.

My biggest reservation would be that they're imported by Century Arms, and they're not too great about having much in the way of parts or service for many of the guns they distribute.

I can't answer about the different hammers but I do have one. It seems to be very well made, the only plastic being the rubber Hogue-style grips (with finger grooves, not a fan of that) and the mag followers. The workmanship is very good with minimal machine marks inside and none outside. The Parkerized finish seems to be a bit weak and wears fairly easily but as I try to take good care and don't mind the character marks it's not a big deal. The biggest drawback to the design is there is no decocker so the DA doesn't make a whole lot of sense, I just carry cocked and locked, and in single action the hammer actually comes back a bit farther than the "full cock" position before dropping.

Not all DA/SA guns have them (the one that springs to mind for me is the CZ-82 and older CZ-75's). Though I don't advocate doing it when you do have a working decocker, you can certainly thumb-down the hammer easily enough. Just keep it pointed in a safe direction while you do it.

My 98DA has the solid ring hammer, while my 98DAC has the normal ring hammer with the hole in it. Perhaps it has something to do with less weight on the compact version. My 94C has a spur hammer.

A yahoo brought one to me and said it would FTE on the first round.

This thing was so dirty I had to soak it. Got it all cleaned up and ran 10 mags threw it without problem.

Keep em clean and they will run.

I bought a jig a long time ago for doing your own trigger jobs on Hi-Powers and now wondering if it could be used to do a trigger job on a Arcus 98DA.
Does anyone have a 98DA with a serial number below 500000?

I may be wrong but I recall reading somewhere that although these guns look like a HP, the D/A models are based on the S&W D/A mechanism. If thats true than anything done to improve the S&W should be adaptable to this gun. A good smith should know for sure though.

I may be wrong too (might apply to both of these), but I think you might be thinking of the FEG Hi Power clones rather than the Arcus ones. They came out with some single action Hi Powers that were pretty close, then still within their "HP" series released a DA model that was essentially a S&W clone.

I've had all my Arcus pistols taken apart and and polished the internal parts. Also played around with the hammer springs on the DA pistols. The double action triggers were pretty crappy until I did the polishing and put in the reduced power BHP hammer spring. Now they are really good. The trigger mechanism in the DA pistols don't resemble the innards on my S&W 5906 and 915, so I don't think it's based on the S&W pistols. I think the pistols are great. Only thing I see that may be a problem is parts for the DA models, but that may improve as they get more popular.
