Raccoons Who has hunted them ,Need advice .

I found a couple 147gr JHP 9mm's out of my Suppressed CZ Scorpion worked pretty good on Raccoons that were destroying my bird feeders.

"The Wildlife Code of Missouri classifies the raccoon as a furbearer and game mammal that may be taken during prescribed hunting and trapping seasons. See current regulations for details. The Code also specifies that you may shoot or trap damage-causing raccoons out-of-season without a permit. Refer to 3 CSR 10-4.130 Owner May Protect Property; Public Safety of the Code for details and restrictions."

Old pic - the brace has been removed. No kill pics.

My partner and I would hunt them on the mid night shift, one night we got thirty! We had a Lt. who was a trapper and would give us $5.00 a body as is (this was 1982). We would get calls from home owners that had a Racoon problem we would bring over a Have-a -Heart trap and when caught we would be asked what we were going to do with them, we told them we let them go in Stokes State forest. Back at HQ we would just shoot them in the cage.

We get them every night eating the outdoor cat's food. Three cat's they have been around for years they are "Fixed" so they stay around the home and don't wander. They kill the odd mouse or two but they actually get along with the Raccoons and Possums. We put out enough food so they may squabble a bit but nobody dies. As far as shooting or trapping them, I really hate sleeping in the garage. My Wife has never said a word about the guns, ammunition, boat and cars I buy so it's live and let live with the critters. Deer I shoot one per season and my Son does too. Anything else is off limits. I did shoot one Raccoon years ago. It was very sick and drooling and vomiting. The Vet said most likely rabid. AK for that one. PIC_0038.JPG PIC_0042.JPG PIC_0046.JPG PIC_0011.JPG

Reportedly can daylight call them.
My predator caller (Foxpro) has such calls.
Do a Youtube search for vids. Supposed to set up by den trees IIRC
Ive simply never tried it.

We have a bunch in our deer thicket. Buddy set out dogproof traps and caught 8 first day of trapping season.

Periodically, we get raccoons and opossums that eat our outdoor cat's food. If we see that they have been around, I set out a live trap and then dispatch the animal in the morning if we caught one.

Once in a while, in the evening, we catch the animal feeding on the cat's food and I can dispatch it with a shotgun from the the porch. They seem to get mesmerized by the porch light and I can"sweep" the animal off the cat's elevated food platform without inflicting damage to the house or porch.

Raccoons are just plain unpleasant critters to have around.

Opossums carry diseases that are very harmful to our horses. The only good opossum is a dead opossum. We almost lost a horse to Equine Protozal Myeloencephalitis (EPM), which is carried by opossums, a few years ago. We were lucky to catch the problem early but the treatment is long and fairly expensive.

Our outdoor cat is one that someone dumped at our small, horse farm 11 years ago. She earns her keep taking care of mice, voles, and the occasional rat. She gets along with our dogs.

Seems I've got a Raccoon problem . Viewed our security surveillance HD and damn if I didn't see #5 of the Buggers shuffling on into the yard .

Normally I could care less but have two small kittens outside and papa Raccoon left a huge dump on My step . So challenge accepted !!.

I need to know how others hunt them ,as I've Never hunted them .

Forgot to mention,: cat food, tuna, salmon, or just about any canned meat is good bait.

Yep. I use a box trap and tuna. Cheap tuna. No fancy albacore required. I catch 1 fox for every 50 coon or opossum. Lol

Years ago when we fed silage and corn I had a game camera watching it and had as many as 30 racoon in a frame.

I've never tried or heard of anyone who has. Coon and groundhog are good if BBq'd. Possum would be one of the last on my list to try if I was starving🤮

When I worked in WV I was working with a mason and the conversation got to around to food ,I asked him if he had ever eaten Ground hog he said yes, when I asked how he prepared it, he said boil the S**t out of it bread it then deep fry it.
About a little while later I asked him if he had ever eaten possum, same prep! I guess an old shoe would taste pretty good breaded and deep fried!

Not to stray of topic, but are opossums good to eat? I see it on TV and in movies a lot, but the truth is, I've never even seen an opossum for real. So, I'm curious. Thanks! :)
I have eaten possum when I was young and inquisitive. I skinned it and cut it up like a rabbit, then fried it. It wasn't great but it was OK.

The old-timers down here (40 years older than me) would live trap possums and feed them sweet potatoes for a couple of weeks then scald them like a hog to remove the hair and put them into the fireplace to roast. Fat would come pouring out through the cracks in the skin. They said that possum cooked that way was the best meal ever.

My dad's third wife's father wouldn't eat anything else for Thanksgiving except roast possum with oyster dressing. He lived in south Alabama.

Ha! Ha! Different tastes for different people, I guess.
My wife's family were all Okies, Arkies and Miseries, and on our first date, my wife talked me into ordering frog legs for dinner. I married her anyway - 52 years ago. She's just never tried to talk me into eating frog legs again. :D

I always remember the old adage “you are what you eat”.
I don’t eat ducks for that reason.
A guy who used to play for Baltimore Colts (lineman) fixed a duck in some sorta sauce and it was very good. 1st time I ever ate duck. He also bbq'd pheasant and it was very good also. Again, 1st time eating pheasant. He lived somewhere between Austin and Houston.

There is a local east Tennessee band called “Wild Blue Yonder”. They have a song, “The possum crawls tonight”. It is set to the music of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”

The song ends with a long list of possum dishes. I’m not sure if many or even any of them are real, but for some folks in east TN, possum is a delicacy.

Feel fortunate if you have not seen an opossum. They are one ugly animal.

Each to their own as I always say and misery loves company . I've eaten Bugs I've eaten mystery stew , during Army Rangers survival training we ate what we could find . However I draw the line on Possums ,they rank just above skunks in odor ,foul smelling critters for certain .

Up until about #8 years ago now ,we've had Dogs and I don't remember not having a Dog while growing up ,so 66 years of Dog history for Me .

Near every dog I've ever owned has killed a possum or two and it's the same tomato coat wash as Skunk . Had a German Shepherd Malamute mix once ,132 lb. 2 9/16 " K9'S My Vet measured them . Took him Deer hunting one year with a group of My Regular hunting companions ,about 1:30 AM we were ALL awakened by what sounded like dogs fighting and cats screeching about 100 yd. away . Pitch black stumbling on every root rock and crevice I could muster
I and two companions armed with handguns ,rounded a huge boulder just before all sounds had ceased .

MY Dog Nazul was on top of a Bob Cat and had the Cat's Neck in his jaws . Bob Cat 0 Nazul 1 ,dead as a door nail broken neck . Never found a scratch on MY dog . When he was 8 months old I was visiting a friend , who had a roommate with a #5 year old Doberman and two mixed whatever adult dogs worked in group attack . So I drive up Nobody home but Dogs are out ,so Nazul jumps out of the truck dogs are coming for him ,he bites the Doberman in the family jewels and it goes down IMMEDIATELY . Other two dogs wanted NO part of that . My dog casually backs himself up too MY Trucks tire and waits for them to come in so he can lash out . After the Dobbie went down they retreated in haste ,so he just sat there waiting for ME to do what I was gonna do .
Ole Nazul was a very very smart Dog ,I never lost a single tool out of the back of that truck

Catch them in a box trap and then submerge the trap in a large trash can full of water. Guaranteed they will not return.

We owned a Avocado and Citrus Ranch in Southern Calif. for nearly #30 years and that's exactly what I did with squirrels ,multiple traps sometimes up to 9 at a time !.

I’m sure it works but too slow for me to think drowning is inhumane. But, coons and possums deserve it.

I use a head shot from a 22LR to put the critter out of my misery. Although, it sometimes take two or three shots. I probably miss the sensitive spots in the head.

My Single-Six is great for dispatching the critters.

I love frog legs. Trouble is they are hard to find on a menu. Years ago in Florida we had the "No Name Storm". It was a tropical storm/hurricane in the Spring. It flooded my pastures and left the cows on isolated high spots. The good part was the high water brought in huge bullfrogs. I would put on hip boots and gig them after dark. Their back legs were about the size of the drum-let end of a chicken wing. They were delicious!

A scientist was doing experiments with frogs when he blew a horn the frog jumped 5 feet. He then cut off both back legs and repeated the experiment, this time the frog did not move.

The scientist’s conclusion, frogs with no back legs are deaf!:)

I'll post photos after I get a critter or #40 . I ordered the Duke Dog proof traps Today . Last night was the straw breaking . Eyes all over My West lawn and the damn things DIDN'T run away like they normally do . Tonight I have MY 9mm Pistol loaded with Birdshot ,as I have NO light on it and MY fricken 5.56X45mm is just too LOUD . I do have several .22 LR pistols and birdshot for those as well . The ONLY neighbor within close proximity hits the sack about 8-9 PM ,so Don't want to muster them out of their slumber too badly .;)
