Pardon my ignorance, but exactly what constitutes a "race gun", and what are they used for?

Saw a new, compensated and ported .38-Super Colt Gov't IV conversion kit in SS for $425 at a gun show...thinking of slipping it on my Norinco...good deal?;)

When I think of "race gun" I think of guns built primarily to compete. The ones I've seen are custom built 1911's w/ hi capacity capabilities (one in 45 & the other 38 super), the slide on the 38 super had been drilled out to save weight & apparently cycle faster, match bull barrel & (IMO) a very light trigger. I'm sure all the small internal parts had been spiffed up too. As I understand, well over $3k in price too :what:
As for your converion kit. $425 for another gun? Sounds like an okay deal...what's it come with?

Examples of race guns

Typically much larger than you would carry, esp IBW ;) Compensators, dot sights, large grips and magwells and 38 Spuper or 9x23 chamberings are on race guns.

And though they usually are, they dont have to be on the 1911A1 platform. The two bottom guns are pin guns, not exactly race guns but they do make concessions most wouldn't make on a carry gun.

None are mine. The first two guns made by Evolution Gun Works the third is an STI and the second post has guns by Ned Christiansen.

If properly mounted, they will certainly eject brass properly. Keep in mind, the rear of the chamber is still completely behind the ejection port. It's a timing thing... I'm sure all of George's and Ned's guns eject brass quite regularly.

Here is mine. It is a .38 Super built on a Caspian hi cap frame by Wayne Berquist in Florida. They are reall fun to shoot even if you aren't into shooting competition.

I have a thing for the color purple. I had a truck that was purple, my wifes hair is purple. My brother showed me the other day a purple racegun that STI had made. Gonna have to get one of those. Why the .38super round? What is the advantage there?
