IMG_0447.JPG Went to buy 4 Daisy 853's for youth camp. Found a rack grade 03A3 with rough wood but 0.5 throat and 0.0 muzzle. Took it to range after cursory bore cleaning.
With some LC72 ball it did this after setting windage and elevation (200yds, 2 clicks right). Lower 5shots after I used 6oclock hold on black instead of white bull.

Then I tried some reloads. 48.0gr H4895 in Federal commercial brass (range pickups), Hornady 150gr FMJ @3.250"oal Fed 210 primers. Light variable wind from right. Range 100yds. Bullseye is 2". Group measured 1.75" spread

Not bad, huh? Not even match grade ammo. 2 groove barrel. IMG_0446.JPG

Plan to shoot rifle in Garand/Springfield matches at CMP Talladega.

You don't need that thing at youth camp, youngsters could develop a flinch. Let me take it off your hands ;) Good buy and great shooting!

Nice shooting rifle. Have owned several Remington 2 groove rifles over the years and they all shot comparable with the w/4 groove barrels.

I have a very nice '43 Remington 03A3, it shoots better than me. Cost me a nice 1911 in a straight trade, but I really wanted a good 03A3. It's a honey. It looks like a GI just came in from a patrol with it. In great shape.

I bought one of those 03A3s in 1963 from the DCM and paid $13.50 if I remember correctly. It also was a very good shooter.

Regards

Enjoy the rifle and your range time with it. Decades ago I gave my dad a Remington 03-A3 and when dad passed away the rifle reverted back to me. Originally a DCM rifle and I have the original papers somewhere, I want to say it was about $19 including the shipping. At some point I ended up with four bolts for a 03-A3 two complete and two stripped. One complete and one stripped Remington and have no clue where I picked those up at. :)

Anyway, enjoy that rifle.

I wasn't aware CMP had any 03s available. Are there just so few that they don't list them on the website? Wonder if I should take a road trip?

I bought two, one in 1958 (it was brand new in cosmoline w/4 groove barrel) and the second in 1960 IIRC, it was a Remington 2 groove, brand new, sealed in a tinfoil package, dry packed. The second one was around the $13.50 range, the first was $22.50 plus shipping.

Shortly thereafter they offered 1911's and M1 Carbines @ very attractive prices, as well.

Interesting side bar, while looking for above ad, saw an article where NRA was celebrating their 500,000th member around that time. Last I heard, we had over 5 million members. We've come a long way, baby, but that number is very disappointing when you consider:

"There were 13.7 million hunters in the United States over age 16 -- 12.7 million of whom used rifles, shotguns or handguns for hunting, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
U.S. Gun Owners Outnumbered Hunters by 5 to 1 in 2011 "

CMP has a "few" as they put it.
They have been dribbling them out at both the North and South stores.
There were 8 out when I went this past Thurs. Most would have passed over the one I got looking for a better "looker" or a collector grade. I almost passed it over. But bore condition was what got my attention.

Added; They're DEFINITELY more than $13.50!!!

Congratulations. Good shooting with iron sites. You must have young eyes.
The peep on the A3 makes for better accuracy for us geriatric shooters. It is my favorite iron sight. My Rem A3 is nothing short of a tack-driver, especially with the Lyman 311291 & 2400 around 2000 fps...
