It was interesting to read that not only does the Government pay hunters for the radioactive hogs, but that it is common to sell the hogs for commercial butchering for the general public.

Game meats are purported to be much more popular in Europe than in the US and are sold in markets and used in restaurants more commonly.

We also have issues on a much smaller scale with contaminated deer and hogs that are taken on the reservations around US DOE and old military facilities that had radioactive contamination releases. Hunts on those reservations are by lot and all game taken has to go through a check station checking the critters for rad contamination. Most deer and boar taken pass monitoring, but some fail. There's no compensation to the hunter other than getting another pass to try for another animal.

Compensation makes sense in Germany, because the process for a hunting license and associated fees are exponentially higher than the US. However, for 5-8K Euro for a license, 100 or 200E pretty much just covers the cost of gas transporting the beast to the check station. (Comparatively they pay for a liter what we pay for a gallon of fuel.)

i bet the boar are spreading the radioactive contaminants through fecal matter, crapping in the water that eventually comes out of a kitchen faucet.
