Rainier Starting loads

Jay,

Which weight of 40S&W projectile are you thinking of getting?

I use a mix of 155 gr. Rainier and Berry's FP projectiles in my 40S&W handloads. Both yield almost identical results when shot out of my pistols chambered in that caliber, so I get whichever is on sale at the time.

My standard recipe for that projectile is 5.4 gr. of Universal and a COAL of 1.145" with a light taper crimp. This is a very mild, accurate and clean-burning target load that chronos about 1050 fps out of a 5" barrel,

Sorry, I forgot to mention it was for the 180grain Rainier. But what you gave is exactly what I was looking for. Have you loaded the 180grain as well? Was that Universal or Universal Clays?

Jay, I called Ranier. Their number is on their website.

They told me to use lead bullet data.

I do and it works fine.

I have loaded 180 gr. projectiles in the past, but moved to the lighter 155 gr. ones just to give myself a little more of a safety margin where pressures were concerned.

Universal and Universal Clays are the same powder. If memory serves, Hodgdon dropped the Clays part of the name recently to eliminate confusion with another powder they sell that is just called Clays.
