I am looking for a J.I.C. rifle that is durable and very reliable

well, you would want something in a common caliber... SO, lever action handgun caliber carbine in 38/357 does the trick and are pretty sweet IMO... a 9mm semi-auto carbine is also a very good option.. (insert Kel Tec sub2k here.) An AR is obviously a popular choice in said situation, in 5.56 of course..

Honestly however, when all is said, one of the most durable and useful guns you will get for the money is a simple SKS... reliable as hell, quite accurate, and chambered in the most plentiful cartridge ever produced...

For more suggestions, I recommend you narrow it down a bit more as we only know you arent interested in an AK, a 22, or an AK in 22....

Handgun cartridge or rifle cartridge?
Carbine length or full length?

Also, the mods dont seem to take to kindly to the "teotwawki" threads... how's about we call it a...."up and go world upside down just in case rifle..."

AKA, a fun, dependable, and cheap to feed, light weight plinker.

just my 2 cents here but i would go with a bolt action verses a semi auto, the semi auto's can be fickle with there loading, as to a bolt action can be loaded 1 at a time and apply some pressure if needed to lock and load :) and i dont think dirt and water will affect a bolt as much....

as for the end of the world scenario i would have a couple old muzzle loaders laying around just because in an emergency you can load just about anything down the barrel :)

A stainless steel, synthetic stocked, bolt action, in 30-06 or 308, with a good medium power scope and back-up iron sights,,, will last well after your grand-kids have died of old age.
You could wrap it up in a trash bag, bury it for three years and dig it back up again and it will work just fine.

If its time to bury it its time to use it!

Why not a AK?
Why not get a Saiga or Vepr in .308.

If this is just for suvival hunting a SKS would be good but if you wanted it for defense a SKS would do but you are limited by the fixed 10rounds(some of the after markets mag work but would not do for long term use)

People claim to get 2" groups with Saigas/Veper AKs

Why not look around for a Enfield 7.62x39 conversion? Takes AK mags too!

well thank you guys for the input but the ak's caliber isnt sold widely around here nor is the sks 7.62x54r i belive. i was looking at a cemte and was wondering about the durability of those. they can go for around 500 and uses a standard nato round which is a plus. I own a nagant but as i said the ammo is not widely avaliable around here. my options are a 308 rifle or a .223 the .357 an 38 are popular also

Ummm... when the "end of the world" happens, Wal-Mart will be closed.

So, don't expect to run out and buy shells when it happens.

Nagant ammo is common as dirt these days.
You can order a lifetime supply of it for very little money.
20 cents per round all day http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=A76254R&groupid=40

By the time you burn $20 worth of ammo, you'll have had a good day's punishment.

First off welcome tbh to THR. Secondly, you may wish to rephrase your question. That bit "MY" world just came to an end gets lots of us thinking the kind of person who snaps and makes it the end of "other's" world. For those purposes you'll get no answer. For a question about a useful JIC (Just In Case) firearm many suggestions are sure to follow.

Thank you for joining, we look forward to your questions and your contributions. I've learned the hard way that not following the rules and taking the other road will have polite but firm consequences from the Admins. (They were nicer than they had to be with me).

Otherwise, just get a 30-30, and three or four boxes of shells, and call it good.

You shouldn't have to look too hard to find one of these for a very affordable price.

But remember, there will be no ammo purchases after that certain point.

w.e.g. you just answered my question. I had not known about a 440rd can going for 80 bucks! that will serve its purpose quite nicely

It is just what I think but...
A Saiga or Vepr in .308 would be way more reliable than a Cetme and just as accurate I think but dont ask me how much they go for. Also if its CAI you might have a fun time getting it to work. Just hope its ready for that "rainy day" :)

I'm confused - I didn't understand his / her question because I am a hunter and a Rainy Day Rifle is a firearm that you use to go hunting on a day when the weather conditions are poor and you do not want to take a nice gun out and initiate it.

The answer in my opinion is a Remington Model 6 or 7600 in .270 Winchester or 30-06
The rifle is cheap and the ammo is common and there is not much to loose if something bad happens to it.
Anyone that thinks that the world is going to come to an end is smoking dope.
Its not going to happen for at least another 40 years.
The end of the world, for those of you who does not understand - is also the day that you die. Which in my case I am already 46 yrs old and sick so hoping that I make it another 40 years is wishful thinking at best - but a very attainable goal.

Once the lights goes out - there is nothing more that you can do about it.
I am just surprised that no one on their death bed ever decided to take other people with them, with the exception of Pharaoh's and Hitler not too many people goes off the deep end and tries to take others with them to the other side.

this thread is a dead end with no merrit. it is a liability. likely to close hopefully soon.

edit: the OP has edited the origional post.... another liability! too many flags here.
