Hale DeMar is the 54-year-old resident of Wilmette, Illinois, who wounded a burglar with a hangun as the burglar was breaking into his house for the second night in a row. (The wounded burglar drove himself to the hospital in DeMar's SUV, which he had stolen the night before.)
Hale DeMar was arrested and charged with violating a local ordinance prohibiting the private posession of handguns.
The local police chief, George Carpenter, was quoted as saying, "We much prefer, for THE SAFETY OF THE HOME, that a resident who finds himself in this situation immediately lock the door of the room he is in and dial 911."
DeMar has thus far replied with a well-worded letter to the local officials, urging them to stop citizens from protecting themselves and their families, and "stick to parade schedulkes and planting our parks."
The burglar, one Morio Billings, has been arrested at least 30 times previously.
I think that this man deserves any and all support he can get, even if it's only an e-mail or two to the right places.
