Ranch Rifle Scope

I recently purchased a mini 14 Ranch Rifle because I raise goats and sometimes have a problem with coyotes. I can shoot it pretty well with open sites, but I am looking at buying a scope for it. I live in Alabama , so there are a lot of trees and hills on my farm. 100 yards would probably be my longest shot if that. This will be strictly for killing coyotes and maybe some other varmints.


Any recommendations on type of scope and what power I should get? I was thinking a Leupold 3x9 maybe? Anyone had any experience with this rifle with a scope?

for coyotes inside 100 yards i woudn't go any higher than 6x, and 3-4x would prob be better.

a larger objective will help you see as it gets dark.

Our Mini-14 All-Weather uses a 4x32 scope. At 100 yards, it's all that you'll need for coyotes and ferals. The 32mm objective allows for the use of Ruger's low rings.

If I remember correctly, Nikon has a nice little 4X that should work nicely for something just over $100. I wouldn't go for any more power than that. Not for your intended purpose.

I have a Leupold Vari-x II 1-4x on my Ranch rifle and love it.

On 1x it works pretty much like iron sights. 4x is plenty of magnification for the capabilities of this rifle.

My mini14 has a burris 2-7x35 fullfield II, I've been pleased with it for the past 3-4 years. Most of my shots are sub-150 yards.

You can change the heat guard and mount a scout scope with a fixed 2.5x power.

Mine wears a 1x4 Leupold.

Mine has a 1.5 to 5 (IIRC) All you need for 100 yards for sure, and I am comfortable with it out to 150ish. It's no tack driver, but minute of coyote is quite doable.

I would think a 4 or 6 power scope would be great but the 2X9 you mentioned would work fine too. 9X is kind of overkill for 100 yds. I am just now getting used to 2.75 power and shooting 1.5" groups with it at 100 yds.

Of course it depends on what you want to spend.

The Leupold VX-R 1.25-4 would be pretty cool. I would do the FireDot 4 Reticle. Great for quick target acquisition as well as lowlight shooting.

Bushnell has the 6500 in a 1.25-8 but they only do it in the multi-x reticle I believe.


Getting up in price would be the Trijicon Accupoint 1-4. Good reticle options there but might be a tad heavy?

Couple good 2-7 options out there too.

My Ranch Rifle has a Burris Timberline 2-7x26 and I'm very pleased with it. Small scope with good optics that looks just right on that compact rifle.

at 100 yards with the minis combat sights, I really dont see a need for a scope. if you have ever been in the military, combat sights are good for hundred of yards, practice, learn to use your sights and a 100 yard shot is just good marksmanship, if you cant do it, get optics. I am an old vet from 40 years ago and marksmanship with irons is a pride.
