im thinking of buying a ruger ranch rifle mini 14 any thoughts of the gun. im looking at getting it in senthetic stock. i find them alott in the paper for about 450.

Decent price if it's not shot out. My friend's mini has no problem hitting clay pigeons at 100 yds with open sights. I've heard allot of other people complain about accuracy problems though.

I'm on the fence about buying one too, but I need an affordable .223

From what i understand, the Mini 14s are accurate until the barrel heats up, then all bets are off. The new target model does look promising, but it costs almost a grand.

Shoulsn't this thread be in the rifles forum?

Ruger Mini-14s are darn good guns. Some people report that they don't group well. I've read the same thing about 10-22s. I have owned 4 10-22s and they all shot fine. They weren't target guns but i didn't buy them for that.

The M-14 is the same way. Its a good truck and farm gun. It won't win a target shoot but will kill gallon milk jugs at 150 yards off hand if you can shoot and will feed it good ammo.

It all comes down to what you want it for.

i just want this gun to have it just to have it:D i now live in the country again with 250 acres behind my house just waiting to be walked so it will be used just for :plinking" since semi auto rifles are ilegal in PA

That's a fair price for a rifle in excellent condition. I bought my stainless/synthetic mini 8 years ago for $475 brand new. I can't believe what they're going for these days, though. Average is $650-$700 . They're not worth that. For another $100, you can buy an AR that will print respectable groups, has loads of aftermarket support and inexpensive, reliable full capacity magazines.

They're minute of pie plate for the first few shots, and minute of tractor tire after that. I've coaxed 2" 100 yard groups out of mine with a cool barrel and handloads, but on avarage the mini will run in excess of 3 MOA.

ASI in Texas accurizes mini's (as well as many other rifles), but by the time you've bought the mini and paid them to make it shoot, you could have had a really nice AR that shoots just as well and had money to spare.
