Random New Year's gunshots in Blytheville, AR

I am in Blytheville, AR, about 55 miles due north of Memphis, TN.

At midnight, random gunfire broke out all over this town of 18,000 people.

There's a drought on in Arkansas, so all the authorities have been urging people to not use fireworks to ring in the new year.

So folks decied to "bust some caps" over here in Blytheville, instead.

It sounded like a skirmish.

I heard what had to be a Glock 17 get ripped through two magazines.

I mean, what else goes "pop" exactly 17 times in rapid succession?

I heard clusters of six shots (revolvers) and obvious shotgun blasts and the high-pitched pop-pop-pop of .22s being blasted off into the midnight sky.

Idiots.......them bullets gots to come down somewhere.....or do they even realize that?

Perhaps some of them are being shot into the ground? A friend of mine lives out in the sticks, and they always fire off a few round at 12:00 in New Years. Never in the sky though.

I live in city limits, and we are not even supposed to use fireworks; but it sounds like WWII outside with all the popper and bottle-rockets :p
 
Guns in the night

10:24 here is CA. It will get here soon enough. 1 of my real estate sales staff used to live in a small rural town about 8 miles from here. (not a nice place.) 2 years ago the gun fire went on sperodically until almost 2: AM. Then all of a sudden; "somebody let off some full auto that just seem to go on and on. must have lasted 10 seconds." then a short pause and he did it again. All of a sudden it was quite as a grave yard. All the gun fire stoped for the rest of the night. I guess the King Cholo spoke, and the rest of the home boys listened." I am guessing an SK w/ a couple of 30 clips, but I wasn't there, and my friend isn't a gunny. I think that is one of the resons he moved.

I would often prepare some snags to blast down at midnight. Either that or cap off blanks. I love the sound of gunfire in the night :D
 
Here in the detroit area, we hear tons of celebratory gunfire on new years. Everything from single shots to full auto weapons fire. My father works for a hospital in downtown detroit and several years in the past, he has gone to the roof and found countless bullets scattered around. None of them come down hard enough to pierce the waterproofing cover on the roof but I think that people just don't think about the bullets coming back down.
 
Here in Fort Worth, Texas, I've heard hundreds and hundreds of gunshots tonight.

Same thing every New Year.

What "hills" are 55 miles due North of Memphis? I rode my bike between Memphis and Chicago 4 times, and I really don't recall any of them there "hills" of which you speak. You ain't a real hillbilly 'less you got chickens roosting on your roofline, anyhow. Anyway, in Baltimore 17-20 "pops" in rapid succession signifies nothing but business for the main Black mortuary chain in town--and that's every night. New Year's Eve in Dodge City. Even the Cops leave the streets between 11 and 1. Ooops! Faux Pas! D.C. is "Dodge City;" Baltimore is "Tombstone Territory."

Ah, yes, B'ville.

I grew up in Memphis (pronounced Me 'om' fis, spoken ratha slowly and with a msec pause between syllables), and had a couple of good friends who lived in B'ville. Used to go up to see them. One's father was in the AF. We'd go over to the fence at the base and gaze in awe at the B-52's with wings that lifted something like 12' on take off.

All's quiet here on the western front. It's been raining so hard here for the last three days that I doubt anyone has any dry powder to shoot off anything at midnight.

I-5 (both lanes) is closed south of here near CA due to flooding, and US 101 up the coast is closed in two places due to landslides. Helluva storm to usher in a new year.

Well, I was TOTALLY wrong about that one.

For a small city overly infested with blissninnies,
this town pulled out some serious fire power during the last few hours.

I'm sure that some were 'legit' fireworks.

But I'm equally sure that some were not.

Those rapid succession 6 & 7 bursts, for example, with 'sharp' characteristics.

Even sounded like a few 12 ga & a .30-06 or two.

My, my, my. This town still got some of it's country edges despite the large % of hippies.

Me? I spent my night cleaning and oiling my 870P.

Baby is happy after the oil bath.

For all those who know that it's pronounced "bli-ville" I just wanted to clarify one thing.

I do not, repeat, do not live here.

I live six hours to the west, on the other side of the state.

I am only here visiting my wife's family for New Year's and late Christmas.

In fact, I am in an apartment in the old airbase, where Kim's step-mother lives.

All the gun fire was immediately due east of the base, in the heart of "bli-ville" proper.

Ain't no way I would live here in "bli-ville" on purpose :)

i've heard lots of fireworks, and a few gunshots in my area.

and at least one siren every 15 minutes or so since midnight.

it's 4:06 am here, and it's still going on.

I feel strongly that I know what you mean and agree with you.

;)

My favorite parts of AR were up around Mt. View.

Some of the best spelunking in big limestone caves was around there.

Memorable moments deep in the dark bowels of momma earth I spent in those caves.

But I'd not live in Bli'ville. Too close to the river for my taste.
