I'm going to the range tomorrow and wanted some opinions on what ammo would be a good start. I'll be shooting a glock 17 and a beretta 92 vertec both in 9mm. My brother gave me a box of Remington UMC but after reading a few posts it would appear I should throw it out. lol

Any recommendations>?

Thanks in advance.

The UMC will probably be Ok .. worth using anyways.

Got a good deal on some American Eagle 9mm from one of the main web suppliers but forget which right now ..... that stuff seems reliable at good price.

I have shot a mess of UMC without problems. Try it and decide for yourself. Also Wichester USA, Sellier & Bellot and Federal American Eagle have performed very well. If you ask enough folks and look hard enough, you'll always find someone unhappy with anything you wish to try. Buy some of each, in conservative amounts, evaluate what you bought, then decide which is for you.

See if your Wall Mart carries the Winchester White box 100 packs. Pretty decent stuff.

Avoid the plastic bubble paks of American brand.

First choice would be the Value Packs of Winchester ammo usually at Wal-Mart for the best price.

Second, I get Federal American Eagle red box brand.

And online, I get S&B.

WWB from WalMart is good, 100 rnd packs are cheap(.40S&W), but I have noticed perused differences some times.
Some are "hot" and some have just enough energy to make it 30'
Also I get some real "zingers" that shoot really high.
But for plinking rounds. They work great.

RTFM

If their 10mm load I just shot is any indication, I'd say Federal American Eagle red box stuff. Also shot piles of S&B 9x19 and .45 ACP with good results. Not to be confused with the junky "American" ammo you see in clear plastic packaging in some places.

I use S&B and CCI Blazer mostly as my range ammo. Sometimes I grab some Winchester White box at Wally World if I need some more ammo quick.

All of those get a bad report on the forums now and then. S&B has a red laquer sealant that supposedly jams up some guns, Blazer has aluminum cases (most probably don't like it because it isn't reloadable), and Winnie White box has spotty QC.

I agree with the poor QC on the Winchester so I don't use it much, but all have been consistant, reliable and accurate for me in various calibers. With the price of Blazer being so low, that is what I've probably shot the most.

I have also shot a little UMC now and then. I've never had trouble with it either.

Edit: Just remembered, I did had some trouble with .38 Special CCI Blazer in my S&W Model 28 .357. The slick cases were sliding back on recoil and jamming the cylinder. I shoot S&B in that one now. I gave the rest of the CCI .38 away to a friend with a K-frame who shot it up without a hitch.

I find that my Glocks will eat about anything.

I'm a budget buyer for 9mm range ammo' also...some suggestions.

1) WWB 115gr FMJ - 10.96 per 100 at Wally World
2) Fiocchi 123gr FMJTC - 5.67 per 50 at Cheaperthandirt.com
3) S&B 115gr FMJ - 5.49 per 50 at Natchezss.com
4) Geco Dynamit Nobel 124gr FMJ - 5.63 per 50 at Natchezss.com

I've used all 4 with satisfactory results (although one of my 9's didn't care for WWB).

So far, I must say that I like the 123/124gr better.

Good luck,

CZ52'

CCI Blazer at www.Natchezss.com

I don't know if they've still got the case deal going, but
I got it for $4.23 /50 when buying buy the case. I think that's
the best deal I've ever had on new 9mm. (I don't buy corrosive)

Another vote for Sellier & Bellot .
I like that stuff. Good results, good price.
I'll use Winchester white box, but I and others have found it's a "dirty" type of ammo. Some guns have issues with it too.
CCI Blazer is ok, just can't save it for reloading though...:(

Thanks for all the tipos. I shot one box of the UMC and 3 boxes of Federal American Eagle.

Looks like I'll need to stop at wall mart and look for some deals.

:what:

the shop i buy stuff at has some reloads from a place called Cal-Ammo

perfect? no. But, at just under 7 bucks per 50, they're awesome. This is in 40S&W, mind you.

I like em. I get some variance in them, but at that price they're fine for punching paper. Have had one fail to fire (striker mark on primer, but no boom.)

In my BHP I shoot Sellier & Bellot 9mm 115 grain FMJ. I find that it's cheap and reliable. I'm still working on a batch I ordered from Cabela's. In the early 90s I used to shoot a lot of Federal American Eagle 9mm 155 grain FMJ through my first BHP. It was good stuff, too.

I have not tried WWB. Yet.
