A friend gave me some range brass and this case showed up. Any ideas as to ring? Is it insipent? case head separation.

Marked "30-06 SPRG", but can't make out manufacturer. Maybe you can decipher.
Please excuse ugly hand!

I have no idea?

Other then maybe the steel case expands into the chamber at that point in front of the case web and won't let loose for extraction??

Or maybe it's a built-in stretch point because the steel case won't stretch normally to make up headspace and seal the chamber??

But that's just a WAG, or two.

Midwayusa -Notes:Since this ammunition is loaded with steel cases, the ring on the base of each piece of brass allows the case to expand upon firing. Since steel does not fire form like brass, this extra ring helps prevent the case from breaking into two pieces during firing. Good WAG, RC

It would also make it obvious (for anyone with 1/2 of a brain) not to reload it as something is definitely not normal about it. Being brass plated steel, I imagine without that ring a clueless reloader might have future trouble if they were to reload some of those.

I'll tell you - that caveat on a box of new cartridges would prevent me from buy it in the first place. There are places to save money and places you shouldn't .... just sayin'. Save money at the grocery store, not the gun store.

I have a few like that and they are brass. I have reloaded them and fired them with no problems. Don't know how long they will last.

A smaller ring than that is found often on 'improved' cases when not fire-formed correctly or in an oversized chamber.

I got it when firing factory 7x57 shells in my 7x57 Ackley Improved Mauser while on a trip when I didn't have enough fire-formed, reloaded ammo.

Then there is all the information that is omitted when describing the problem. Then there is the firing pin, it gets all the blame.

The steel case in not embeddable, If the case is allowed to slide rather than stretch dirt, grit and grime between the case body and chamber will ware out the chamber, but, if the case has an expansion joint the case body locks onto the chamber and the case head is allowed to move back to the bolt face.

Meaure the length of the case form the shoulder/datum to the case head before firing and again after firing. If the case increases in length between the shoulder and case head when fired, the expansion joint works.
