Range brass scrap or $

Often while shooting I come across brass thats worth picking up, that I don't reload for,
243 Win
30-30 Win
270 Win
7mm Rem mag
30-06 Sprg
some 7mm and 300 Weatherby mag.
and others...
All of it I keep (except .223, 9mm and 40SW)that appears to be once fired, and free of defect. The rest goes to the scrap yard. My question is, should I keep it, or scrap it, or would someone want it ? The Last batch that went to the scrap yard fetched a $1.20 per/lb. Or is this a "eBay" thing ?
 
Sounds like you are getting some money for the used brass. Should you keep the brass, and would someone want the brass question is yes. You just have to find the best way to sell (or trade) that works best for you.

I've seen is some gun shops that sell reloading supplies will have some bins selling used once fired brass on consignment or bought from customers. One thing that I do is ziplock bag all of the different calibers that I don't use and trade for brass at gun shows or other brass collectors like myself.

I love shooting ranges...there potential gold mines in brass.
 
I would save it and buy a gun to fit it :D . If you have room to store it you can easily sell it, but keep in mind that you'll need at least 50 pieces to make it worth shipping. I personally don't even look at adds with less than 100 rifle brass or 1000 pistol brass.
 
It's definitely an eBay thing. If you KNOW it's once fired (colored sealer on the primer is a good clue) I predict you'll get much more for it on eBay than as scrap. You'll do even better if you have factory boxes for it. I know this having sold 454 Casull and 45-70 brass on eBay. I knew it was once fired since I was the one doing the firing.

I also agree, it's best to buy a gun to fit it.
 
Yup. Sell it on Ebay if you have an account. I can't believe what people pay for brass etc. on there.
 
I think we are all missing the boat on this. We all go to the shooting range and come accross once fired brass. We should collect it all up. then trade it amongst each other.


Let me know what you shoot. Send me all the 30-30 you find and what ever caliber you shoot i will do the same.

A guy named Martin at my range here in CA picks up range all day long, 7 days a week. He grosses about $3500 to 4000 off of it per month (he says), and all of it pretty much under the table since they pay him in cash at the yard.

In 2004 he bought himself a brand new Tacoma in cold cash with his brass money.

The crazy sob, though, picks up brass constantly - even during live fire. He crawls around on all fours with a coffin nail twixt his lips for 8 hours each day, under the tables, behind the lines, a few feet in front of the lines. The ROs let him do it because he's been doing it for years and its the way he supports himself. Supposedly he's a vet and he can't get by on his benefits alone.

The downside? He's mostly deaf, smells like stale pee, and probably has mild to moderate lead poisoning.

I am going to start picking up the hard to find calibers, though.
 
Silverlance. LOL. One of the ranges I go to has a guy that does the same thing. He doesn't reload or resell it- other than for scraps. Sometimes when I see some people leaving the range while I'm on the way in he's there picking it up right away. At first I used to get pissed but I'm fortunate that I can afford to buy commercial ammo and just keep my own brass... and pick up what I can from other people when I can. I just hate seeing wasted brass when I can reload it.

I went to an IDPA practice in the snow one day... I was distraught that all the nice new brass melted into the snow... lost till spring!

For a flat rate shipping box ($8) you can make a nice trade with someone and you both get stuff you can use.

Some guys on here hooked me up with .38 spc brass a while back like that. You can pack a LOT of brass into one of those boxes! Enough that the $8 fee is very minor.
 
When I was in college there was a cantankerous old geezer that would show up at the range and do nothing but pick up brass. I think it is silly to go to the range and not shoot, but that is just me :). Anyway, the old codger passed away, and his widow put an ad in the local newspaper for the 13 RUBBERMAID GARBAGE CANS full of mostly once fired brass and shotgun hulls he had in his garage. That was about ten years ago, and the stuff would probably be worth thousands of dollars today.

i am planning on going this weekend. i can pick up a whole bunch. so all of you guys need to start picking up brass then post what you can trade. For sure im in. i think we need to start a new link on trading range brass

remember save the 30-30 rounds i have first dibs on them. let me know what you guys shoot. at the range i go to most of the rifle rounds are collected by shooters who reload. but i can pick up a whole bunch of pistol rounds
 
Scrat...Ive only got 50 30-30 cases right now but will save up some more...especially if there could be some 223 for trade involved.
 
Now this is a great idea.

Brass is worth far more as cases than it is as scrap. I recently paid $3/100 45 acp cases. I would guess that about 300 to make a pound.

Sell it for scrap at $1.20/lb or sell it as cases for $9/lb (or trade it for something you can use)?
Easy decision.
 
the good brass gets sold for reloading, the junk that can't be reloaded still gets cleaned and goes for scrap
 
this is a couple years out of date but it might help. we were overhauling the fire suppression system in the main magazine for the 5 inch gun. we were replacing old brass piping with new copper. instead of throwing it in the trash we put it in friend's treuck and took it to the scrap yard got 18 bucks a pound for 30 pounds. had a nice party.
 
i've got a boatload of 30-30 1x fired brass that i'm willing to trade.
i need some 7.62x39 125gr. bullets or what have you got to trade ?

as soon as i come back from the range this weekend i will let all of you guys know. all i have now is a bunch of .40cal and 9ml. but as soon as i collect some more i will box them up and post for you guys then we can trade what we have. for sure.

Srat, great idea. But there could be risks, like modified brass 9x19 trimmed to 9x18, 30-06 necked down to ?, 25-20 into 219 zipper, and .45 acp into 45 gap. just to name a few.
 
There is obviously someone else picking up range brass in my area besides me. I pick up all brass and take it to the scrap yard wher I trade it for brass I can use. They always seem to have just what I need in usable brass.

i would trade fairly whats its worth. same time it really dosent matter as far as modified or not. just like anyone else i would mic out everything and makel sure its within specs. before i use it.
