I was out at TrailGlades range today, and was sitting down at the end where the SWAT guys practice.
I had recently changed scopes, to a Redfield 20mm 1 X 4 scope on the Marlin 336Y. Groups were running 1 to 1 1/4 inches at 100 yards.
The guy that was spotting for the SWAT team took a look through his spoting scope at my target, since it was right next to one of his shooters. He was very complimentary in his comments on my shooting. He said he was not aware that a 'darn 30-30' could be that accurate.
His shooters were better of course, but not THAT much better. :)
I was using my handloads, a 170 grain Speer flat point, over a good load of IMR 4320.

Hey Mannlicher, try not to throw out your shoulder patting yourself on the back :neener: I'm only kidding :)

I have always thought that I was better with my Marlin 30/30 than any other gun I own when it came down to shooting off hand or in "real world" hunting situations. Something about having the magazine way out there just makes those rifles feel so stable to me. Even from the bench, I don't think I could shoot 1-1/4" groups, though. Nice shootin'

Good shootin!! You'll be surprised what a sharpe eye and steady hand can do!

Great job I definately could not shoot that good at 100 yards. .......I shot against border patrol once at 75 feet....... :p

Mr. Loud Mouth (umh, I mean gun)

Since when do they let 14 year olds shoot against the Border Patrol???

I took a quick look at your posts and you claim to own a Custom 50 bmg, a Serbu BFG-50, a AR-50, a PSS in 30-06, a fully automatic M4 and a whole slew of other weapons. Wow. Quite a collection for a 14 year old living in NY. Your parents must be really loaded or that paper route of yours must be pretty lucrative.

Tell me, when did you buy your Serbu? Is it the forged or cast receiver? What type of brake does it have? Did you buy it from Mark or was it a PP purchase? How is it that your cheapie 22 Bushnell can hold up to the recoil of the BFG, when mine destroyed two scopes (that were a lot more beefier and better quality than a 22 Busnell)??

When did they make a PSS in 30-06??? I've seen many PSS over the years and have never saw one in 30-06. What barrel length is your PSS? Mine is 24 inches. And when did you buy it?

How is it that you can hold the AR-50 like you are cuddling a light baby. At almost 40 pounds and 5 feet long, isn't that sucker heavy?

And based on that picture, you must be one SCARRY 14 year old. Hell you must be approaching 8 feet by now.

Kid, I really suggest you try to keep a little more quiet and maybe you can learn something from the wealth of knowledge this board has.

I don't mean to be rude, but you really are laying it on pretty thick. I am glad the young community is taking an interest in firearms and the 2nd amendment. Afterall you are our future, but please practice some restraint when engaging in the some of the threads here.

PS. Hey did you ever by any chance work as security in a mall???:neener:

Your right, I was just reading all his posts from something else, then saw this one and I guess it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Getting back on track. Good shooting Mannlicher. But don't judge your shooting ability on what a SWAT sniper says.

SWAT snipers in my opinion aren't very good long distance shooters. Not that I'm belittling them or their job. They just don't train for long distance shoot. They train mostly for the 100 yard shot, as most engagements that they will ever have to do will be within the 100 yard range (more like 70 something yards, statistic my counter terrorism teacher spouted a long time ago). And at 100 yards, I think they kick @ss.

I think your average long distance shooter will give them a run for their money on ranges 500 plus. I've shot against "snipers" un-officially and have held my own using my slightly modified PSS. Granted this was during a nice day at the range and no one was shooting back at me. Plus the fact they see their shooting as a job and are out at the range as a "duty", and I see my shooting as a hobby and hence have practiced for longer and more often than they do.

The ones you have to worry about are the military snipers or the old geezers at the range with a beat up old bolt action shooting iron sights at targets 600 yards away. When I'm around them, I bow my head slightly out of respect and try to pick up any bits of info I can from them. Their the ones you should judge yourself by. 95% of the time, you'll come up short. Trust me. :(

I was using my handloads
No wonder you were shooting nearly as well as the snipers! You were cheating! Using hand-crafted ammo!

Just kidding. Sounds like you have developed a load your rifle really likes. That's what handloading is all about.

Heard about this old couple that do some "consulting" for the Army sniper program.

They routinely shoot at 1000 yards with modified M-14 with iron sights and hit a very very respectable MOA. And so the Army sniper program wanted to teach their snipers to use iron sights should the need ever arise, so they contacted this couple (from CA) to train their boys.

Hell, I can't even see a target at a 1000, not to mention a black bullseye. Jeez :(

Great Shooting! I've noticed that my rifles with scopes get a lot more use than those without. Reference the Marlin 336, I do as well with it as with my "high dollar" shooters. I've got maybe five times as much $ in a DSA STG FAL with a 1st gen Springfield Combat 14x scope as the Marlin 336 with a 3x9 Bushnell. And at 100 yds I hit better with the Marlin. I load 150g round nose with 26g IMR 4895, really puts a large deer down. For target practice (single shot) I load up 150g military pulled fmj with the same load. They do real well also. I use IMR 4895 in my Garand, P17, three 03s, FAL, M1 carbine, 30-30, .303, and AR15. Not the best for each but works very well overall.
