Why does it seem that more and more people are buying guns so that they'll look good at th range or in hopes of getting some extra looks or interest at the range? It's as though this gun buying has turned into a big "looky what I'm shooting."
Go to a gun show and it's as though every guy has a buddy they have to get approval from before buying a gun. One will pick up a gun (they proberly have no intention of buying) holding it with a cocky grin and making sure his buddy sees him with it. Maybe I'm missing something. I buy a gun because I like it not because it'll impress others and everyone else will like it.


Anyone explain?
 
Just like with cars, clothes, and pretty much every other consumer product, there will always be those who are more concerned with image and others perception of them than with matters like quality and utility. It's unfortunate, but hardly a new or unexpected development.
 
Rule #1 - buy what you like and enjoy shooting.

Side-effect - some guns just might (and do) give a huge grin factor to others - instance being able to enjoy a few shots thru a .454 when they are not fortunate enough yet to own same.

Otherwise - ''pose value'' is a very poor way of choosing one's firearms - reminds me of one or two folks I have come across with pimped out race guns. ''Lookee what I got''!!! :rolleyes:
 
It's the generation. These guys are what I call "all show and no go." Or "all fluff and no stuff." They think if they buy some jewelry, that's all it is to them, they'll be something. They watch the history channel and talk like they're all special ops vets, yet are affraid to sign up for a few years and actually do something. They buy their favorite athletes jersey and put it on their flabby little bodies and think that makes them something.

They are the peter pan boys. They refuse to grow up and are content to pretend instead of going out and making a difference.

I don't think anything's changed much. Been shooting all my life, and I can well remember even as a young lad, some acquaintance of Grandpa's making it a point that everyone on the range knows that he just got the latest and greatest ... Boy, I remember after the release of the first "Dirty Harry" movie in '73, all the macho guys who showed up at the gravel pit or the local gun club with spankin' new Model 29s, bragging about how much they set 'em back while the rest of us were still shooting our '40s or '50's Model 10 M&Ps or forty year old Gov't models ... Then it was stainless handguns, things like the Automag, Desert Eagles, and on and on ...

Although -- now with the advent of internet gun forums and more widespread and effective marketing of new guns (via ads or in movies and television) -- we're more aware of all the neat new stuff out there ...
 
My personal choices have been S&W 686+ 6", M66 and Ruger MK512. Picked up a PC 627 in a drawing, but would not necessarily be my esthetic choice.

Guess I just don't get it.
 
The good news is the posers never last long at the range. They find that it requires real effort to master the skills needed to be proficient, much less a masterful shooter. They'll be on to the next fad soon enough.
