Range Report: .22 Conversion Kit on G17

I just received this Advantage Arms LE 17-22 Conversion Kit a couple of days ago, and thought you all might be interested in its performance. It's designed to allow you to shoot inexpensive .22LR in your Glock 17 by replacing the upper unit and magazine.

The kit itself is very well executed, and professionally packaged.

It also looks very good mounted on my Glock 17.

But the proof is in the pudding, and here's how it shot:

(Blazer .22LR ammo, 7 yards, two-hand hold, iron sights, indoor range. The bottom group was made by the first ten rounds fired out of the conversion.)

Now I'll be the first to admit that I'm not that great a shot, but this conversion unit makes me look good! Also, the iron sights never had to be adjusted, this is how they shot straight from the factory.

In the interest of accuracy, functioning was not 100%, but improved throughout the session. I'm interested to see how it does after several hundred rounds are shot downrange. I tested the Blazer, Federal bulk pack, and American Eagle ammo with virtually identical accuracy and functioning. Advantage Arms doesn't recommend them, but they seemed to work fine.

All in all, I'm very happy with this new conversion kit. It certainly adds flexibility to my Glock 17.

Functioning was not 100% because you used bad ammo for that kit, guy. Go with Remington Golden Bullets and she'll do close to 100%. Ammo must be over 1200FPS and NOT Federal.

Hk Dan, I know the ammo I used was not recommended. But it's what I normally use, I had it available, and thought "Why not? It's not like it was going to damage the kit." I was actually a little surprised it worked as well as it did with the ammo I tried.

The malfunctions (mostly stovepipes) always occurred in the first round or two of a fresh mag, never in the last six rounds. I got two extra magazines with the kit (only $20 each, so that's not bad), and all performed the same. The magazines are all 100% polymer (except for the spring) which felt a little odd at first, but worked well with their supplied mag loading tool.

I'm going to give it a thorough break-in period, and then if it just won't function closer to 100% with what I have, I'll give the Remington Golden Bullets a try. I'm leery of them, however, because I've had problems with Remington .22LR rounds in the past...

I think polishing the feed ramp and chamber made the biggest difference.

In my kit, Golden Bullets run 100%, except for the occasional dud primer
Mini Mags work 98%, Occasional FTE or stovepipe
Velocitors and Interceptors are 100%, I try not to run too many of them though as the manufacturer specifically advises against hyper velocity stuff.

Thanks for the link, gofastman. A "fluff and buff" might be just what she needs.

But I think your phrase "crappy ammo" might be a bit harsh. I prefer to think of my small cache of .22LR ammo as "Ammunition commensurate with my current financial station in life." YMMV...

Congrats on the luck with your conversion. I had the that kit for my Glock 19 and was disappointed. It was OK at best but it was hart to really treat it as a "Training" tool since it was so light compared to the stock 19 and you can't practice recoil management.

I ended up selling it. Sometimes i think it would of been cool to keep but i was just not impressed with it. Mine also needed CCI Minimags that i was paying almost $8/50rds for and that wasn't really saving me money since i pay that for 9mm ammo.
