SOG has a sale on the CZ uppers for the AR ($265) so I ordered one and slapped it on my DPMS lower. Here's my impressions:

The fit nad finish of the unit is ok. The chamber and bore are bright with crisp grooves. There are machining marks on the bolt but it couldn't be called "crude" by any stretch. The receiver and free float tube appear to be painted aluminum. The magazine is a high quality polymer unit.

The upper installed easily and is a tight lockup to lower with no relative movement between the upper and lower unit. This is probably driven by the fact that the takedown pins are relatively difficult to drive in at this point in time.

The bolt works smoothly with the charging handle on the right side instead of a central chargin handle on most ARs. This isn't an issue for us right handers.

I slapped a cheap 3-9x40 scope on the unit, grabbed some 10-year old bulk pack Winchester 22LR rounds and headed to the range. After a brief sight in period I started testing for accuracy. This image shows my 50 yard, 10-round groups with cheap ammo.

THE GOOD: This is a quality unit for the price. Needless to say, the accuracy is quite accetable on a unit of this type. With better quality ammo, I suspect those groups would shrink. With my telescoping stock and light weight, this appears to be a good youth rifle...plus it looks evil.

THE BAD: So far, I have a few complaints. The I got inconsistent ignition on my rounds. I originally thought that this was a ammo issue but after cleaning, I realize that this is a hardware issue. My hammer was striking that bolt just above the firing pin...thereby wasting energy on the bolt versus hitting the fireing pin. I blame this on the DPMS hammer. I took a dremel tool and shaved the top edges of the hammer back...tests with an empty 22 case show that the firing pin really crushes the rim now...hopefully problem solved.

My other issue is that the last round of the mag is misfeeding about 50% of the time. I suspect this is a mag spring issue but haven't solved that one yet.

So far, pretty pleased.

PS -- how do I shrink these dang pix?
