Well guys, I am now a believer in 1911's.

I went to the range on my lunch break and took my brand new Kimber to give it a try. This is my first 1911 (not to be my last) and only the second time ever I have shot one. It completely suprised me. It had less recoil than my G23 with most rounds fired (185gr. +p Gold dots, 230 gr Federal Hydra-shocks, 185 gr Federal hy-shocks, 185gr Whinchester wb). Only the Golddots were more dificult to control than the .40S&W rounds I normally shoot (180gr Winchester SXTs, 180gr Golddots, And 180gr Winchester WB). This gun is very accurate. I had one raged hole of about 1 1/2"s shooting the gun at 10yrds. I have never done that with a brand new gun out of the box. Now for the bad side. Using 2 Wilson Combat 7 rnd mags, 1 Kimber mag with new 7 rnd Wilson Combat guts and 3 CMC 8rnd mags with new WC parts I had numerous problems. I had 1 Stove pipe with a live rnd not a casing, this is with a CMC mag not repeated. I had 3 failure to go into battery with one of each of the above styles of mags. I had one failure to lock the slide back with one of the WC mags. And one mysterious FTF with a live round in the Chamber, I assuming that it was not completely into battery, but the hammer did go forward when I pulled the trigger. I racked the slide with out checking assuming it had been a failure to feed. I assume that these problems will go away with use. I ony fired 160rnds today as I did not have any more time for an extended session. If the failures go away I will be very happy.

As to the guns fit and finnish. This is a very nicely executed pistol. The entire gun is very tightly fitted. There is absoultley no play between the slide and frame. initialy it was difficult to even rack the slide. Now after this shooting session it is much easier, but there still seems to be no play in the slide. As I had no experience with the 1911 style pistols I was affraid that the grip saftey would be a problem, but it never interfered with use. In fact as long as you have a proper grip it should never be a problem. Even trying to grip it very lightly the gun still never failed to fire because of the saftey. The thumb saftey gives a very satisfing click sound when ever it goes on or off. It is easy to manipulate with out being too easy where it may accidently be flicked on or off. The Meprolight night sights that came on the gun are very easy to pick up. The inserts are Identical to the factory night sights on my 23 and 27. The sight pictures also is so simillar and was peobably the reason I did so well with this gun out of the box.

Now,I am open to a couple of suggestion, I need a good IWB rig for this gun. Any suggestions? I have a Sidearmor OWB rig that I will use where deep cncealment is not an issue. Also, What do you all recomend as a carry load? At the range they had some Winchester LE 230gr Ranger SXT ammo. I picked up a box of it. But again I would like to hear any suggestons you may have. Thank you all for your time and I hope this is informative to you. Juan

Looks to me like you need a quality leather rig for that beauty!

May I reccomend Milt Sparks? :D

I have their IWB Summer Special II. Hands down the best holster I've ever used.

Ranger SXTs, Golden Sabers, Hydrashocks, Golddots...they're all good. Use whatever feeds reliably.

Buy the rig if you want, but forget about carrying that gun until you get at least 200 consecutive rounds with the carry ammo with NO failures. If you carry spare magazines, make that 200 with EACH magazine.

A gun you can't depend on is worse than none at all. You might get by without trouble if you have no gun. But when you draw, trouble is right there and you are inviting a lethal response.

I have no personal experience, but I'll bet dying with a puzzled look and a jammed gun is no fun at all.

I'll second the idea of qualifying each gun and each magazine with any ammo you want to carry. I don't always go up to 200 rounds each, but I shoot enough through each to be comfy.

This might have saves my butt recently... I was practicing with my Kimber Pro CDP and a cheap Norinco. 230 ball ran fine in both. 185 HP ran fine in both. The Norinco crapped out on 200 pswc, but the Kimber ate it with few problems.

Now comes the interesting part... I had picked up some 185+p Gold Dot for carry purposes. Just to make sure, I put some through the Norinco. Not a problem and fair recoil. I reloaded the mags and put some through the Kimber. Well..... Besides making the little lightweight critter jump like a nervous virgin, the slide locked about every other round!

At first I thought it was the enthusiastic recoil helping my thimbs to engage the slide lock. It turns out that the nose of the Gold Dot ammo was just enough fatter than the generic HP ammo in just the right place to hit the inside of the slide lock.

It might work in a 9mm, .357Sig, .40, etc... but NEVER assume any given ammo will work in any given .45! I'm SO glad I verified this ammo/gun combination before I filled the mags and holdered it for carry....

I'm probably going to fix the gun so it can handle Gold Dots, but I'm going to stick to standard 185 loadings. I'm also NOT going to carry them until they've been verified!

I have no intention of carrying this gun till I feel confortable with it and its reliability. Had you read my report you may have seen wher I wrote that I hope these problems go away. Believe it or not this is not my first gun. I would still appreciate any holster suggestion anyone may have.

My favorite holster is the Desantis Millenium Pro Fed Paddle Holster. It's comfortable, is easy to take on/off, and it holds the gun securely. It doesn't conceal as well as the inside the waistband type holsters, but those are too uncomfortable for me.

I'm sure you've discovered that opinions on defense ammo vary wildly. For what it's worth to you, my opinion is that the Winchester Law Enforcement Ranger line is probably as good as it gets, and various Gold Dot loads are probably just as good. My peference in 45ACP is the standard pressure 230gr Ranger-T.

Update.

I just got back from latest trip to the range. I fired 250 rounds throught my kimber and it was perfect. No ftf or fte or failures to go into battery. The gun has now ran Through about 400 rounds with out any more problems. I think that this Kimber is a keeper.
