It hit above 60*F today in Northern Indiana, so even though I've been a bit under the weather I went out to try my handloads, which are mid-range loaded 185gr hardcast LSWC from Missouri Bullet Company.
For my control group, I used 230gr Blazers.
After warming up, I noticed a couple disconcerting facts: First, I'm finally starting to have trouble seeing that small military front sight. It looks like a small dot XS Express Sight set is in my future, though I really prefer the precision of the smaller sights.
Second is that my pistol seems to be shooting high with both 230gr ammo and 185gr ammo. This is at distances from 15-50 yards. I did initially check it at 7yds when I brought it home, and it's dead on there. I guess we'll see - I can always take a bit off the top of the rear sight I guess, if it keeps this behavior up at 7yds when I check it, hopefully tomorrow.
The control group:
I have no explanation for the shotgun-like group. It was likely be, though it's hard to mess up a rested 15 yard group! I will concede that the pistol was pretty dirty by this time.
However:
My groups with the 185gr LSWC from Missouri bullets did not reflect poor accuracy, only poor sight regulation.
A note on these bullets: I am impressed. They are extremely hard. I couldn't scratch them at all with my thumbnail, and when I used my folding knife on one, it was scratched, but not as deeply as some would suspect. It also dulled my knife up pretty good.
These bullets are made for IDPA and are made to be pushed to velocities meeting the major power factor. This would likely explain their hardness.
I like them much better than ball.
I did shoot some combat groups, but the were dismal. While they would have likely ended the career of a person of low character, I am sorely out of practice and refuse to show those groups until I improve.
I really have to explore the reason I'm shooting high with both types of ammo though... that's just flat irritating. If it's good at 7yds though, I think I'll call it good and not mess with it.
