i went to the range with the smith and wesson 29-4 classic hunter 8 3/8 i picked up yesterday. i loaded up some ammo with the .432 sized 240 gr swc i had ordered from MBC for my super redhawk since the throats on the smith were .432 with one chamber having .431. loaded some ammo in the morning with 22.9 gr 296( can't meter out 23 gr exactly) and 10.5 gr unique.
sighting it in at 10 yrds the previous owner had it 2 inches low and to the right. after adjusting windage, rezeored at 25 yrds with some more adjustment for windage and elevation.
the double action on the gun was very heavy but the single action was quite light. i shoot my srh double action but this one i mainly shot single action .
shooting benched while sighting it in, i had a better focus on the sight with my glasses compared to the SRH due to the one inch increase in barrel length.
it shot both the unique load and 296 well. i didn't shoot good groups with it at 25 yrds offhand but was ok with my 50 yrd gong.
it was shooting good with the mbc coated bullets. benched, i tried the 225 yrd gong. from my SRH experience, i knew that aligning the rear blades with half the height of the front sight( lower edge of the orange) and aiming with the top of the front blade will get me close. first shot was close and then i nailed it on the second shot. i think it was a 10 or 12 inch gong. it may have been luck but the later misses were close as well. with my srh the dispersion was more with laser cast and dardas lead bullets. i havent tried the srh with appropriately sized mbc bullets yet. it took hornady xtp bullets to have the same narrow dispersion with the SRH. this one was shooting well with just hardcast pc bullets.
had another cylinder where i got 3 out of 6 hits in one cylinder with another 225 yrd target. it was repeatable as well as i let another range buddy shoot at the same target and he got 2 out of 6. all ,benched of course. with full disclosure we could see our misses as close with a puff of dirt and a hit was no puff of dirt. the gong on the deer silhouette is anchored and so doesn't swing. conceivably, we could have been hitting the frame outline of the deer but I've hit the same target before with my srh with a spotter with a scope and the hits were the same.
i had some 240 gr hornady xtp with 19 gr of 2400 that i shot at the end to push out any leading and amazingly missed 4 times out of 6 with my 50 yrd gong. i was trying the heavy double action but it may have been fatigue as well.
only shot around 88 rds between the smith and the ruger. the nicest surprise was that there was no leading. the super redhawk that was shot for comparison actually had a small amount that i cleaned out easily with choreboy even though i only shot a few rounds through it.
i am very happy with the gun but I'll likely be shooting it single action mainly. the full underlug helps with the recoil I'm sure but it does make the gun feel nose heavy as a tradeoff when shooting offhand.
i did feel some discomfort with my left middle finger knuckle. i never get anything like that with the ruger having the hogue monogrip.
turns out the cleaning rod for brushing out the chamber on the ar was a perfect cleaning rod for the gun as well.
