I took a buddy to the range yesterday.

He grew up around guns, but had not owned one for years.

He had his recently purchase Yugo SKS and I was showing him how to shoot it.

Bad part was his Yugo would not cycle and extract the empties. So, it turned in to a shooting session with a straight-pull bolt action

Started him at 25 yards, then up to 100.

Every string of shots, the groups got tighter with more hits on the paper.

I played around with my own SKS--A Chinese model that takes AK mags, and my AR-15 which I let him shoot.

He hit much better with the AR (surprise, surprise) and enjoyed it.

Then, we moved over from the 100 yard range to the 300 yard range.

We put up targets at both 200 and 300 yards.

He got a few hits with his SKS at 200, but chose to not try at 300 (We were using sheets from a desk calendar as the long range targets...about 20 inches long by 14 inches wide or so).

Then, I let him pop off 10 rounds from the AR at the 200 yard target. Ten rounds, ten hits on the paper.

To end the day, I fired at the two 300 yard targets. Five rounds on each target from the SKS for 10 total rounds and five rounds on each with the AR for 10 more total rounds.

Got a total of 6 SKS hits on the paper and 9 AR hits.

I had shot a highpower match with my AR before and knew what it was capable of.

But the Chinese SKS pleasantly surprised me, as I had never fired it at 300 and felt pretty good about hitting a 14X20 inch target 60% of the time with Wold ammo and a 16-inch barreled rifle I got for $225.

We checked the gas setting. That was the first thing we did check.

Oh well.
