Range Trip

So a month ago my brother and I head out to the range for some shooting. We had been shooting for about 30 minutes and were taking a break when I looked up and saw a deer walking across the range about 80 yards out. If you look closely in the picture, to the right of the close up target stand down range there are two empty target stands, she's between them.



Yesterday evening when I went to the range, WHILE I was shooting she came out and started browsing. I fired one down range across her bow at about 10 yards. She looked up, then went back to feeding. I fired a second round, this time across her stern, she didn't even look up. In order to keep shooting without worrying about hitting her, I had to physically walk down to where she was and shoo her up over the burm. I walked to within about 20 feet of her before she decided to do that, and she was cursing all the way.

The range where I used to shoot was right next to a golf course, and there were often deer on both properties, even while shooting.

The deer hung out there (and inside town) especially during hunting season because no hunting was allowed on either the golf course or the shooting range.

A couple weeks ago, Myself, Justin and Smoke Rizen were shooting at the rifle silhouette range at the NRA Whittington Center. There was a young antelope buck wandering the range most of the time we were shooting. He would hear a bullet whiz by and run off, only to return and see what had happened.

I think the poor little guy was deaf.

A couple years ago, on the same range, a mule deer was doing the same thing.

I think the only reason she's still alive right now is the fact that the detention facility is the eastern border of the range and the game wardens hang out there. However, we do get the occassional unsavory at the range to shoot and I worry about her. It's a good thing that most of the people that use our public range are up and up. Most worry more about her having a fawn and it getting hit by a stray bullet.

There are some kind of ground squirrels that have dug burrows in all the side berms of our range. I see them scurry up and down the hill in between shots. Crazy things, but probably safer there than out on the prairie.

I've had a similar thing happen with deer, turkey and one time a pheasant. They all get used to the gunfire and it doesn't spook them at this point. There was one range that I shoot at that had two dead deer out near the 200yd targets. Idiot shooters must have thought it was fun to shoot the deer.
