I am new at this. I just bought some Ranier 151 gr. copper plated bullets in 356 diameter at a show. The guy told me they were 9mm bullets. I cannot find any powder charge info for this weight and size. I have a Lee press with Lee 9mm dies. I am using W231 powder. Can you guys recommend a powder charge and also can I load these for my .38 special?

Thanks

Find a powder charge for a bullet in the 147gr range and use that data. Probably would not work very well in a 38 as you would have lots of blowby and loss of velocity/accuracy.

I have old Speer published data for 160 lead bullets, and it shows 3.3 grains of HP38 (identical to WW231) as max, and I'm not seeing data at Hodgdon or my old WW manuals for what you want. I would see if you could find some 147 grain lead data, and go slightly lower on the start and max as your guide.

IMO, if given a choice I would not go much below Unique in burning rate for 147's. I know others have had great results with Bullseye, Titegroup, etc, but I like a more moderate speed for 9mm, especially if I were to go with weights way out of what it was historically loaded with.

As far as .356" in 38 Special, I would think your results will be poor... For my 9mm pistols .356" is too small, and even .358" for lead (or plated) for my S&W model 60 is as small as I like to go. Maybe load a few and see how it goes, but don't be surprised if you see keyholes and loose fit in the case.

The guy lied.

Those bullets are for .38 Super. To make them work in 9mm you should use a STARTING load for a 147 gr jacketed bullet and seat the 151s to where they will just chamber freely. Their nose shape is such that they may have to be seated pretty deep, making it important to not push the powder charge.

They won't work in .38 Special unless you have an unusually tight sizing die and expander to give a tight case neck fit on the .356" bullet. You should not hard crimp a plated bullet because it will cut the plating and cause leading and miserable accuracy.

Maybe he was just ignorant Jim, but he did mislead the OP for sure. :scrutiny:

And Jim is right, don't just use top 147 Gr data for 151's.

I dug up my Ranier data sheet, and they spec 3.7 grains max of WW231 for their 147 grain bullets for 890 fps @ 33,700. As I mentioned earlier, back the start and max down a bit minding proper OAL (longest your pistol will allow) for the application.

Not really anything exotic, as 158 grain 9mm loads from Israel, Serbia, and Fiocchi are easy enough to get. Although not my bag, reloading 151 grain bullets should be easy as any other if precautions are maintained.
