From fewer laws to more laws, how would you rank the following states? Arizona, Oregon, Texas, Colorado, Florida, and Pennsylvania. Do any of these states have weird CCW restrictions, long gun in vehicle laws, backdoor registration, or anything of the sort?

Pennsylvania

Hey Nate,

I'm not going to rate them in any order, because my understanding of some of the other states listed is kinda limited. I do however know a decent amount in regards to Pennsylvania.

IMHO, I think Pennsylvania might be one of the more friendlier and somewhat less restrictive states regarding gun laws.

CCW - Costs $19 for 5 years and of course it is a "Shall Issue" state. NO training requirements. PA also issues Non-Resident permits as well. Resident permits are currently honored in 16 states. The only places off-limits to carry is court houses, first and secondary schools, and state parks. Open Carry is techinically legal, but my understanding is it can present other issues, in more populated area's.

My CCW or "PA License To Carry Firearms" actually took 2 days to get from start to finish, but this does vary by county.

As far as "use of force" and/or "justification of force" statutes you can look here: http://members.aol.com/StatutesP1/18.Cp.5.html

Sorry that my response isnt exactly what you were looking for, but perhaps it helps a little.

P.S. I don't even play a lawyer on TV.

Edited to add - www.packing.org has plenty of info, as already mentioned.

Oddly enough, the Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Ownership's state grades are a pretty good guide.

You want to live in a state that the Bradys award a D or F to.

Yup, although the Brady Campagin is apparently succeptable to grade-inflation when it suits their purposes. The "bad" states have lower GPA's than the numbers work out to be, up to two half grades in some cases. Also, the "good" states are higher than they should be. Allegedly, this has to do with "extra credit", but going from a calculated B to an A- is quite a stretch especially with "demerits" on the state's record.

Kinda makes me wonder if they people doing this list ever had to calculate a GPA. :scrutiny:

Colorado's firearms-related laws are actually pretty reasonable—but the state legislature is now in the hands of representatives of the Democratic (sic) party, and the governor is a R.I.N.O.

Yet for some reason, they don't offer an evaluation of Washington DC, which as someone pointed out, is their idea of a model community.

Right now Oregon is moderate on gun laws. Ginny BurDICK wants to change that with a state AWB, illegal to carry in schools (and other public areas), etc.. If she gets her way, Oregon will be just as bad (or worse if she REALLY gets her way) then California/NY/NJ (you get the picture). I doubt that it will go through but with Eugene and Portland running the state, there is a chance  .

The state police, which do the NICS checks hold the paperwork. I don't know if they have to destroy or not.

Right now we can own anything we want (even Class III as long as we follow fed. law) and our restrictions to places of carry revolves only around fed. buildings.

Owens a RINO? That's news to me.
Colorado Dems aren't very anti-gun. The urban/local legislatures are a different story. But we just solved that problem by making the state gun laws uniform throughout.

Pennsylvania has a 'backdoor' registration system. About a month ago the Pennsylvania Supreme Court said it was okay for PaSP to keep a 'spreadsheet' of all new handgun sales showing buyer's name, address and firearm purchased. PaSP has been keeping one for 3-4 years.

strong in one area, weak in another

As far as restrictions on where to carry and ease of getting a carry permit, PA is my pick. Florida and Texas especially cost too much time and money and the list of places you can't carry is pretty long. But PA has restrictions on private sales and I don't think any of those other states do.

If you want to dig really deep, you need to find out things like if you can shoot somebody trying to steal your car, or if by law you have to run away first (even if you are in your own house). Those kinds of laws are usually called 'duty to retreat' laws.

OVERALL Pennsylvania is probably the best. The list of no carry zones in other states will probably be more of a hassle and affect a person's daily life more than a private party sale restriction.

Owens insisted upon all manner of restrictions in Colorado's CCW bill. Colorado's representatives of the Democratic (sic) party are as irrational and vindictive a bunch of anti-Second Amendment bigots as those elsewhere in the nation.

Why do you think Denver has banned so-called "assault rifles"? Who do you think opposed both CCW and shall issue? Who do you think insisted upon background checks at gun shows?

Arizona is the best. Texas and Florida are ok.

Colorado and Pennsylvania are tolerable.

W-T: Actually, PA's state police has kept a handgun list since the '30s or '40's, IIRC.

The ruling you refer to is still an abomination. The logic was "since there are a number of unusual and exotic ways a PA resident can have a gun without getting his name on the list (ie: longarm, spouse to spouse or parent child transfers, moving in from out of state, etc) it's not a registry".

Feh.

Hey, it don't stink too bad here in Nevada! :neener:

Great gun laws, absolutely no restrictions on what you have in the car and if it's loaded, shall issue CCW and Class 3 friendly! Woohoo! :D

And none of those stupid laws about not carrying where alcohol is served - carry where you want pretty much, including casinos.
