I acquired a Russian captured K98 a while ago and was removing the shellac, to restore the stock and attempted to remove the buttplate. The first screw came out fine, but the second screw snapped midway.

So now I have half of a broken screw laying around an the other half still stuck in the stock. How the hell can I get it out?

A screw extractor might be able to solve your problems (search for that) or go to a hardware store and just ask them how to remove a broken screw from wood. Needle nose pliers can't get to it can they, or maybe a magnet could work...I don't know.

Edit maybe an impact driver, or maybe just drilling the screw out?

EWWWW! Thats a nasty problem!

I have actually dealt with this particular issue before, and it wasn't that bad to fix.

Got the buttplate off I presume? Probably won't be able to get the old screw out but can try drill it and use a small easy out to remove the remaining screw. Thats an iffy option, but worth trying if you don't like my other solution.

I drilled a hole immediatly beside the broken screw, and the bit was eating treads off the screw itself as I drilled. When I had drilled the wood gone from alongside the broken screw, I pryed the screw reminants into the new hole and removed it.

Then I made an oblong walnut plug, smeared epoxy in the hole and on the wood plug and drove it into the big oblong hole until it was bottomed out.

I then sawed off the protruding part of the plug, fitted the buttplate, and redrilled the hole for the new screw.

Not that bad a job. And it's all under the buttplate out of sight. Good as new!

Me, i would use sawdust and carpenter's glue around the plug, but the procedure is 100% identical to redrilling for a hinge screwhole that's gone bad on a door frame.

I'm going to try a left-handed bit and see if that works. If not, I'll try the plug methods. Thanks for the help!
