RC had a new model dodge 4x4 pickup that he was quite fond of. Well one day about 2 years ago, it was running bad and he took it into the dealership and found out rodents had eaten the wires to the tune of about $900. RC was aggravated so he began shooting every squirrel in his yard on sight. He lived in town on a street lined with mature Oaks. Super squirrel habitat. soon the squirrels were wise to his air rifles so he started trapping with small conibear traps in cubbies. He place 3 of them around his truck in the driveway. Believe it or not RC removed about 285 squirrels in less than 2 years from his yard. He would give me periodic reports. He learned where he could shoot them and what shot worked best. He said they were very tough and many times would crawl off and not be where he thought they should be when he went to retrieve them. He would freeze them and put them in the garbage for the city to haul off. He did not want to clean and cook them.

We did internet research on this problem and found that the green movement had caused dodge to use soybean based wire insulation on there ignition wiring. RC was not the only person whose vehicle was damaged by rodents!

The good news is that RC was confined to his home taking care of his wife who had advanced alzenhimers but he could shoot his air rifles and really enjoyed his squirrel removal campaign. He new exactly which pellet worked the best. He and I were both amazed that after he had killed over a hundred he would not see a squirrel for a week or so and then they would return. His best bait for his trap was peanuts in the shell. He said a squirrel could smell a unshucked peanut for a very long distance.

I was concerned that he would get reported to the wildlife agency for killing squirrels out of season so he did not mention his activities much. One day an animal control officer came to his house to retrieve a deer that died in his neighbors yard. She noticed his havahart traps and cubbies in his yard. She asked him what he was trapping and he told her. Much to his relief she said they had lots of trouble with squirrels destroying the county vehicles and encouraged him to keep up the good work!

He shot his last squirrel #285 on June 27th, he soon became ill and could not breathe. He went to the Hospital on July 11th came home on oxygen for a few days returned to the hospital and passed on August 14, 2016.

So add another skill--Rodent Control to RC Model's long list of expertise.

I really miss him!

I do too. I put a small personal memorial to RC on my reloading bench a few days ago. I just simply wrote out his signature line across the support up top with his name, his real name, and date of death. Bull your lucky to have had the man as a friend, and we are lucky to have had him here. I think about him periodically, and strive to be like him. He was always polite, concise, and dead on with his info. His posts here were always worded well and oozed with care and kindness. He loved helping others, a quality far too rare these days.

I will certainly miss his informative posts. RIP R.C.

I just had bypass surgery on Aug. 1st, went home on the 10th and was back in on the 13th on oxygen with blood on my lung. They drained it and I got out again yesterday. His story scares me.

I have my own squirrel problems so I can relate. Do we know if they were the smaller Eastern Grey Squirrel or the much larger Reddish colored Fox Squirrel? Greys are easy to take with an air rifle, but the Red Fox ones..... UGH!

God bless you RC!

I remember ready his post about the squirrels eating his wires on his truck and all the fun he had shooting the squirrels. I got a lot of enjoyment from reading that post.

Squirrels are cute until they eat up a wiring harness in a truck. Or eat through the side of your house and get in your attic. They are terribly destructive.

Prior to the turn of the century there was a humorous website claiming that Squirrels are the Spawn of Satan. You can still find the 10 reasons why on older web pages. What was not so funny were the accounts of damage squirrels caused, from leaving nuts in the air intake of vehicles, falling down chimneys and tearing about unoccupied country homes. My neighbors had one fall down a chimney and die, it cost them about $300 to get the thing removed. Too bad they moved out because others in the neighborhood love squirrels. I hope they buy an environmentally friendly Dodge and spend thousands replacing the wiring.

For awhile I though I was fortunate to have a couple of pretty squirrels around. Then there were more and they started chewing things up and spreading black walnut hulls around. Then there were more than two. All of them now get shot on sight if at all possible.

They're very adept at hiding in trees but I've also become very adept at finding them. The last one went up a black walnut tree. I spent 15 or 20 minutes trying to see it. Finally, I saw a limp that looked a bit larger in diameter in one place than it should have been but due to leaves I couldn't see any part of a squirrel. I put a 3 inch 20 gauge magnum load into the thick part of the limb and down came the squirrel.

It's funny you mention this, I was erasing old emails and I just saw one where RC and I were talking about the squirrels!

I have a 2015 Ram and have killed most of the squirrels that would come around my house. Chipmunks on the other hand are plentiful. I wonder if Dodge was still doing those stupid "green" wires on the 2015's. If so the chipmunk Armageddon is about to start!

I'm in CA, but was born and drug up in KS. Can't remember a time not fishing or hunting something. Ate lots of winter rabbits, squirrel.

RC stayed in KS. I'll miss his posts. He just seemed to be a well respected fixture here.

I too had gray squirrel problems. They chewed the wires on my 2000 Chrysler minivan.I can't shoot them in town.I live trapped 23 one summer and relocated them in the country along a wooded stream.I never got back to hunt them.At least RC had some thing to distract him from his problems. The problem with squirrels is their reproductive rate.My oaks attract them.
