Hi. I just purchased an RCBS Universal Heavy Duty Decap Die # 87585 and I was wondering, in the event of a broken pin, how to replace one? All the decap dies I have, unscrew the tip and easily put in a new one. Am I missing something here? This new one seems to be pressed in or not replaceable. Any thoughts guys? Thanks.

Did they change the design recently? I have a RCBS universal de-capping die that uses the smaller pins. Whether it is a one piece or two piece design, loosen the nut and unthread the shaft from the top. If it's the two piece design like I have, you then turn the die upside down to remove the broken pin. With the one piece, just unscrew the old one and screw in the new one.

It seems that RCBS does not make the universal decap die anymore. Mine works with any rifle and pistol cases and uses the small pins with head.

OP if yours looks like what Jake linked then that is what you need. If it is a two piece and uses the pins with a head like I posted then order these:

Either way, the pin gets changed out the same way like I said in my first post.

Contact RCBS, they are really good about taking care of customers. They might even send one for free. I know they will send the small pins like I have when one breaks.

could you just thread in the de capping stem from another other RCBS sizing/de capping die?

Are you the stem is only one piece? Mine has a holder for the pin that unscrews from the stem. But it is usually screwed on tight. Secure the stem in padded vise jaws. Using vice-grips with a small piece of emery cloth as a pad (grit side against the holder) loosen the holder. If needed, place two nuts on the stem and tighten against each other and chick in the vise.

And contact RCBS. They will send you some replacement pins. And will tell you what to do if you still haven't gotten the stem apart.

Your suggestion seems right on. Thank you. I will try it.

a side not on breaking the pins, I always do this wrong, but supposedly you're supposed to put a shell and run it up into the die to center the pin before tightening the stem in the die with the lock nut. never did this right, but ran into that info the other day - seems to make sense.

And with all the crimped 223 brass I was breaking pins, so I bought the Lee decap die. And after breaking a couple of pins with it, I found a stronger pin for the Lee from squirreldaddy.com, which comes in a 3 pack. Haven't broken a pin since, and still have 2 spares.
