I broke my RCBS 223rem decapping/sizer rod and RCBS sent me a new one but I have no clue how deep or shallow the rod should be.

can anyone help me please?

The decapping pin should protrude far enough below the base of the die to reliably push out the expended primer. Just make sure you don't screw the spindle down so far that it contacts the base of the case, or it will bend again.

Hope this helps.

I usually have my decapping pin protrude about 1/8" , just enough to push that spent primer out.

Screw the die down to meet the ram/shellholder.
Screw the decapping pin down juuuusst far enough to push a primer out.
(Trial & error/eyeballing it is fine) ;)

Normally 3/16" to 1/4" is all that's needed. Any longer and you may be bottoming out the pin holder/collar. Best way to set is run a cartridge up into the sizing die (lubed) and keep increasing till it pops out then a little more. Lock it down with the ram up to keep it centered.

Note: Do not allow the decapping unit to contact the web of the case. I set the pin using the method described by MEHavey. Roughly the pin extends 3/16 to 1/4 inch once setup. Works for me anyway.

Or, if the above is too much of a pain for you, after you have the proper shell holder in the ram, screw the die down until it contacts the ram at the top of its stroke. Then with a deprimed shell in the holder run the de-priming rod down to where it contacts the shell base and raise it about an eighth of an inch. Lock it down and have at it. But, in my opinion, Mr Wack is right. If the pin protrudes about an eighth of an inch below the base of the die you are pretty close to the correct location.
