Hello,

I'm Reloading Once Fired .223 Brass that is Remmington ammo bought from Walmart.
I've got the RCBS Universal Hand Priming Tool i bought used with some other equipment. Im using the small White primer feed and the small primer plug, and I cannot for the life of me get primers in the pocket. It even folded up a primer in the pocket!

I've called RCBS and they have Graciously replaced all the Innards, but still NO GO. RCBS even said they will replace the unit, but this can't be that hard!!

Am I missing something??:banghead: I can clearly see that when the Primer Tray Assy is attached, the Primer is Not Centered in the Feed Hole (see pic)

. I have to Press and hold down on the Tray Assy to get the primer to line up.

Any one have any Idea what the Problem is??

RCBS Customer Service has been Great and I have no complaints!

Thanks,
David

I'm not familiar with the RCBS equipment, but are you missing the shell plate holder on your tool? There has to be something to guide your brass and center it over the hole. Each caliber will have its own holder.

Sounds to me like the primer pocket might be crimped...

If this is the case, then you need to remove that crimp somehow. There are several ways, but it must be done before you can reprime the case.

If this isn't the case, then I'd return the unit to RCBS for replacement. Life's too short to agonize over case priming...

"but are you missing the shell plate holder on your tool? "

No, The Universal priming tool has Two spring loaded case holders you can see on either side of the primer hole.

As far as the primped primer pocket being crimped, I've got some Hornady brass i can try.

Thanks
David

Ridgway (Sounds to me like the primer pocket might be crimped...)

Bingo! That's it.. Primed my Hornady cases no problem..

Thanks,... Now how do I Remove the Crimp??

Thanks for your help!

If you just have a few, ream it out with your chamfer/deburring tool, or a sharp pointy pocket knife, etc.

Or if more then a small bunch, swage them out with an RCBS primer pocket swaging tool.

If you have a butt-load to do, buy a Dillon swaging tool.

You can ream them or swage them. A reamer is cheap, just chuck it into a drill and cut out the crimp. It is pretty simple, but the reamers wear out. I prefer the Dillon Super Swage 600, it actually forces the crimp back open and will last forever. It also comes with all the parts to do small and large primer pockets. It is more expensive, but you will never need to buy another one.

DDawg,

As an operational aid, sometimes when you insert the case into the RCBS hand primer, it does not center up exactly and the primer won't seat.

If you feel a high resistance when seating the primer, ease off the primer and rotate the case a little. It will then center up and the primer will seat properly.

Glad your problem is solved. Yes, the primer won't seat unless the crimp is removed from military brass.
