I had sent RC a PM a few months ago asking for his 1903A3 load and he pointed me to post #7 on this thread

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=793682&highlight=125+sierra

I never got around trying it and after learning of his passing I decided it would be my way of memorializing him to get off my butt and make them. So I got up early and fired up the ammo factory

I had to make a few substitutions as I didn't have Sierra 110 and 125 bullets so I used 110 VMAX and 125 Nosler BTs. I also had to use H4895 in place of his IMR4895

This was the 110g VMAX at 100 yards

And this was the 125g Nosler load. This one looked really good

I'm shooting my dad's sporterized 1903A3 and its my plan to hunt whitetail with it this year. That 125g load might make the cut. It would be kool to take a dear with dad's rifle and RC's loads.

Looks like you have found a winner. Way cool that you have something to memorialize two folks no longer with you in body. But their memory is alive in you, so they live on.
Can I ask what the banners represent on the wall behind your bench? I'm guessing you were in the Army and those are your units colors. If you served, Thank You!!
And I bet you stand up for the national anthem, and place your hand over your heart as well.

My dad is still with us, in his 80's and despite a few scratches and dings he's in good health

And those are guidons from some of the units I served with

I didn't remember but I did load up a bunch of test loads for the 30-06 using a 110gr bullet. It was well over 4 years ago and I just found them yesterday. I wanted to test 110gr 30-06 loads because I didn't have a Varmint rifle at the time. Before I got a chance to test them I came across a .223 bolt action rifle and must have forgotten to shoot the 30-06 Varmint loads. I remember asking rcmodel about it at the time.

They are 5 of each all made with a Sierra 110gr Varminter HP bullet @ 3.170" OAL

Federal Brass
WLR primer
55gr, 56gr, 57gr and 58gr Varget

Federal Brass
WLR primer
55.0gr, 55.5gr, 56.0gr and 56.5gr IMR4064

Remington Brass
WLR primer
56gr, 57gr, 58gr and 59gr IMR4895

Remington Brass
WLR primer
49gr, 50gr, 51gr, 52gr and 53gr IMR3031

I'm going to try and shoot them in the next 2 weeks and send them over the chronograph too. It's a tough job having to shoot all that ammo but someone has to do it! :neener: :D

That is a very nice rifle, Nature Boy.

Just a thought on sporterized classics. Back in the day when most of the sporterizing was going on they weren't classics. They were just ugly old military surplus rifles and a cheap way to get a nice rifle. Yep, some were mangled by people that shouldn't be allowed anywhere close to tools but many became very nice sporting rifles. Now that they are not readily available they can be considered classics.

Well I'm glad your Dad is still around to spend time with his son. I didn't mean to prematurely put him in the grave for sure. A good looking rifle you have there, the laminated stock is way cool. My first rifle was a sporterized Mauser in 30-06 that was a Chilean army reject. The barrel was pretty much gone so I had it rebarreled in 257 Roberts. It lives on as a tack driving deer rifle.

I have a U.S. Model 1917 that was sportized but not as nicely as the one above. They cut the front of the wood away but left the barrel at 26". I put a nice Nikon scope on it not pictured. It's a very accurate rifle even though it's the original barrel. I did replace the combat trigger with a Tmney trigger that is a big improvement. I also have a 1903A3 that was changed by someone along the way with a synthetic stock and shortened barrel but I like the 1917 much better. (sorry, no pics if the 03A3)

Ive been away from THR for a while, hadnt heard RC had passed on. Im glad to see some of his knowledge is still being passed around the forum.

Damn find shooting, and a beautifully sporterized 03, something which i have no issues with at all.
I do like that 1917 as well its very nicely finished. For some reason ive always liked the 1917, the ungainliness of its lines have always appealed to me.

I want to make some more loads and go shoot them today. I'd like to try some heavier bullets. What would you guys say would be the heaviest I could use that would have a chance to be accurate and stable through the 03A3?

On the heavier side I have:

175 SMK
178 AMAX
180 Nosler BT
208 AMAX

Ive shot everything upto 180 thru my old 03, i shot mostly h4350 at near max. I had a very good load for those 180 ballistics but off hand cant remeber it ill go look.
