re-chambering

Just like to know if I can re-chamber my rem 700 varmint .308 to 300wsm?

If so how much work is involved?

How much barrel length might i lose?

I'm not sure off hand, but I'm fairly sure the wsm is the mag bolt face (.432) or so I think. You would have to buy a new bolt and rechamber/ have the chamber cut to length. Why do you want a short mag? My opinion is they are way louder and don't carry the terminal efficiency downrange, and brass is more expensive to boot. Anyhow good luck with your decision.

Barrel will have to be removed, cut, rethreaded, set back and chambered. Bolt face will have to be altered, extractor modified, possible alterations to the ejector, feeding will become a problem so magazine will require work, possibly the magazine rails where it fits the receiver will have to be machined out.
The Short Mags are known for not being smooth feeding cartridges.
All in all, it would be faster, cheaper and easier, and probably more satisfying to buy another rifle in the chambering you want.

A 308 Win to 300wsm conversion is possible, but you'll have to alter the bolt face and feed ramps. The hard part will be getting the wsm fat rounds to feed properly.

It can, but the cost and finding someone to make it all come together and work reliably and correctly might be a problem.

The cost of the project easily outpaces a new rifle.

Thanks for all the info.

While it may sound like a lot of work, I thought it would be cheaper than having to fully build a new custom rifle. As the LGS tells me, he cant get a Remington 700 in .300wsm with a 26" barrel in Australia. Which is why i was looking into re-chambering an already owned gun.

maybe getting a new barrel in .300wsm would be easier? then it would just be the bolt and feed ramp that needs work.
