Cheap/Unique/Possibly dumb refinishing idea?

I pulled an old mossberg 500ag from my dads closet. He's had these guns improperly stored for quite some time.

There is some rust and lots of scratches on the gun/barrel.

What are my options as far as super cheap doing myself jobs?

I've always wanted a nickle/ss shotgun and maybe this is the excuse?

Does anyone have any links to DIY job guides with pictures and instructions?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT:

Ok this might be the dumbest thing anyone has ever heard...but:

I was very much into automobiles and when i needed a part painted (valve cover, cold air intakes, rims), i was always able to achieve a very reliable and clean finished with high temp spray paint.

Bluing/nickle is just a type of "paint" that protects raw metal correct? The same would apply to my metal car parts correct?

Would high temp BBQ spray paint work? Or is that the dumbest idea you've ever heard?

I did do a bake on paint job on a machete with cheap paint and my only complaint is the runs. I did the coatings too thick and it's damn hard to get thin enough. After baking it on I sanded it and did some more coats and it's ok. Not pretty though and I'm planning on stripping it off and having it parkerized. Just cause. :)

If I ever try it again I'm going to test a variety of paints baked on metal test pieces so I can choose a good one and have those pieces to test corrosion and solvent resistance.

Bluing is not a coating. It's a colored oxide that is part of the metal surface itself. Nickel is a coating though. If you don't want to go to the trouble of rebluing, consider one of the spray on firearms finishes. I've had particularly good results with Lauer's Duracoat. It's easy to apply, doesn't require baking and they make it in a gazillion colors, even gun blue color.

I tried the $5 Cold Blue from my local gun store.

I stripped/sanded/polished the blueing to a bright shine and applied it. Now the gun is only slightly blue and still has te high polish.

I think im going to strip it and get the Durabake since i dont have a paint gun.

Thanks a lot for your answers.

Anyone have any experience with their Durabake or Duracoat?

Lastlong?

Lauer has an inexpensive airbrush kit that includes canned air. It's all you need to use their coatings and do a fine job. It's what I started off with, and I did 3 long guns flawlessly. I've since bought a nicer air brush and a water filter for my compressor. For all the added expense, it doesn't do anything that the inexpensive kit from Lauer did.

The finish itself is amazing though. It's very thin so it doesn't look like paint. It's also extremely hard and doesn't scratch or wear easily at all. I can see this finish lasting for decades easily. One of the guns I used it on is my knock around AK-47 trunk gun. The gun gets a lot of abuse but still looks as good as the day it was sprayed. No rust, no dings or scratches.
