I need a recommendation for a good book on Situational Awareness and combat mindset. Something that is not too technical as to combat techniques, but more focused on mental preparedness.

Thank you.

Both of the NRA guides to the Basics of Personal Protection provide a reasonable starting point. The one on Outside the Home" seems a bit better.

IMHO it all started with Cooper's Principles of Personal Defense, and that's still the best place to start...

PRINCIPLES OF PERSONAL DEFENSE
by Jeff Cooper, with a foreword by Louis Awerbuck

This new edition of Cooper's classic Principles of Personal Defense - with a fitting tribute by firearms expert Louis Awerbuck and all-new drawings by renowned illustrator Paul Kirchner - presents his timeless theory of individual defensive behavior clearly, concisely and practically. All free people who aspire to stay that way should read, study and share the wisdom found within these pages. Considered by many to be one of the greatest books on combat mindset and proper defensive mental conditioning ever written, it deserves a place of honor in every library.

Here's a whole bunch of good ones from one of our own.
My favorite ,next to Jeff Cooper's, is Walt Rauch's Real-World Survival. He's a guy who's been through it all.

BOOKS:

IN SELF DEFENSE, Michael T. Izumi

THE PRINCIPLES OF SELF DEFENSE, Jeff Cooper

THE TACTICAL PISTOL, Gabriel Suarez

THE TACTICAL ADVANTAGE, Gabriel Suarez

BLACK'S LAW, Roy Black

IN THE GRAVEST EXTREME, Massad F. Ayoob

THE AYOOB FILES: The Book, Massad F. Ayoob

ON KILLING, Dave Grossman

THE BULLETPROOF MIND, Dave Grossman

REAL-WORLD SURVIVAL, Walt Rauch

TRAINING COURSES (I am assuming pistol based???):

NRA "Personal Protection in the Home" course, you have to crawl before you can walk. (Pre-skul of gunskul).

DHG1, Thunder Ranch (learn not to "poke self in the eye with it", gunhandling skills)

API250, Gunsite Training Academy (ditto)

LFI-I, Lethal Force Institute, without a doubt the greatest value in "gunskuling", LFI-I provides more concentration in the law of self-defense that 3 year of law school and the bar exam (Problem #2, mindset).

Anything with Louis Awerbuck, he makes his bones with "advanced" gunskul stuff, however the man is outstanding (and yet underrated) with beginning students, especially women. He has a natural ability to relate to them and they dig his strong, silent manner.

I second the motion on The Gift of Fear. Gavin DeBecker has an impressive resume.

Practical Intuition by Laura Day is another good one, although some of you may find it a bit "new agey" for your tastes.

Situational awareness is a state of mind that you can learn. As you move about study the people that are within 21 feet. How would you respond to those individuals within that zone? Can you see people within 21 feet of your vehicle? Society teaches us to ignore those individuals in our zone that we do not wish to interact with. Situational awareness can be thought of as a back to nature way of thinking.
