Real dumb question

I'm new to reloading and I don't really have anyone to ask - so here it goes.

I am wanting to reload my 45acp. There's a guy locally who is selling semi-wad cutters for a decent price. My question - can I use these in my semi-auto 45acp? I'm thinking I cannot, but I really don't know the answer.

Second question - can one use lead cast bullets?

Cast bullets are fine, I'd try the wad cutters first to see if they feed reliably before buying a bunch of them. Depends on the feed ramp of the gun, chamber, powder, magazines, ect. I've had a couple that fed them well, another couple that didn't handle them at all. Time has shown be that 230g round nose are the best for my .45s. Really depends on the gun.
 
Ask the seller if his bullets are suitable for a 45acp.

BTW - I shoot a Taurus PT145.

Any suggestions on powder??

PT145 you shouldn't have any problems . .Springfield XD45 I have never been able to get LSWC's to feed 100% reliably.

I'd start with AA#5, but I've got 8lbs on hand. :)

45 Acp

I shoot swc in my 1911s.I have 3. 200 gr swc-3.6 of bullseye or 700x.leave 1/32 of bullet rim out and crimp roll crimp.shot this load for 30 yrs.and still doing it.:)
 
If and when I start loading with a new gun I will useally make a run over to laser cast and get a few sample packs of different bullets to try before I buy.

I don't know if they will mail them out but it would be worth asking.

The shop or somebody that works at the shop might give you 5 or 10 bullets to try out.

most 1911 will cycle SWC fine but there are a few that won't.

If you buy the bullets and they won't cycle, gives you a reason to go buy another gun. Have bullets need gun.
 
Oregon Trail sent me half a dozen of their SWC and RNFP via mail recently so I could check feed and function. Darn quick, too. I sent an email and got a package in the mail three days later. I'd expect your local guy would work with you.
