This is not some "I heard it from my second cousin's brother's boss who saw it on TV". It is an excerpt from an email from the physician son of one of the guys that works with me.

"...
Patient care aside, the issue of safety within the downtown area led to the
need for doctors and nurses to team with hospital security and patrol the
lower floors of the hospital with personal firearms to prevent entrance of
looters into the hospital. At the meeting where this plan was detailed the
statement was made that "we need to protect ourselves because we have no help from anyone else". That was Wednesday night, almost three full days after the hurricane hit. Staff was told to stay inside the hospital and not to shine lights out the windows as it would make them targets."

Interesting that the hospital staff had personal firearms on hand.

Okay, here's one for you.

1) You are a doctor or nurse working in a charity hospital in one of the worst sections of a high-crime urban area.

2) You know that where you work will be hit by a big mo-hunkin' hurricane in the next few days.

3) Do you or do you not bring a gun to work with you just before the hurricane hits, regardless of what hospital policy or state laws may or may not say about the matter?

I know what the math tells me when I do it in this case......

It might surprise the average person to know how many people in the south are routinely armed.

I went to NOLA with a group of firefighters for labor day weekend. Ninety percent of our group was armed.

I guess, "Hey bitch, git yer ass in here and change this bandage" is pretty much out of the question!!

Only if you don't want a sucking chest wound to go with that bandage.

I know a lot of doctors who are shooters, but very few lawyers.

I have never seen any stats on this, but it is the opposite for me. I anly know a few doctors that are shooters and 20+ lawyers that are. Unfortunately, both porfession's "advocacy" groups (AMA and ABA) are anti-gun.

hmmm one must also take into consideration that the number of lawyers may be more or less than the number of doctors.

that would be an interesting statistical study! i wonder if there is any correlation between the 2 occupations that may increase/decrease the chance of owning a firearm.

When I lived in New Orleans the military would send their Doctors to do a tour at Charity Hospital. They average about the same number of shootings as a small war. This gave the military Doctors real gunshot experience.
Hell if I worked there I would carry a M60.

At a hospital here in Colorado I recently had cause to notice the sign on the door about firearms.

I don't remember the exact wording, but legal concealed carry was OK... they just don't want people openly carrying firearms around.

Not true for me

"I know a lot of doctors who are shooters, but very few lawyers."

I know 2 lawyers in my group of shooters - no doctors, unless you count the shrink. Hope he's better at his profession than he is at shooting...... :uhoh:

A little off topic but why weren't those hospitals evacuated during the "mandatory" evacuation before the hurricane? At the very least, why didn't they lay in some extra food, water and other supplies?

There's an OBGYN that frequents the range here. He owns several NFA firearms and the last time he brought a 1919A4 in a wheelbarrow and a big bucket full of belts. Must be nice to make the fat cash and be a gunny at the same time. :(

Was talking to an ER doctor friend of mine the other day, and mentioned that hospital staff in New Orleans were arming themselves.

He said he wasn't suprised, that the ERs that he works at are heavily armed .

He said officially the hospital policy prevents anyone from carrying.

But in reality, many, if not most of the nurses have CHLs and carry.

I don't know if you've got these in the US, but we've got something called "ABC Plfaster" over here in Germany, you'ld call it "ABC Bandage". It's simply a bandage with cayenne pepper used to cure soma things. I guess this is what the "stupid bitch" should apply on these kind of folks. Ooops...

I'm a lawyer who shoots. I know quite a few others, most of the guys I work with are shooters or hunters of some sort. Know quite a few doctors who shoot too.

You now know one more. And there are several here and on TFL.

One more here also.

My brother is a doctor and he shoots also.

I think that the profession that I found shoots the most was engineers. I know more engineers that shoot than any other profession.
