I 25 acp, 38 acp, 380 acp, and 38 special

common calibers, maybe not the .38 acp anymore, but can anyone here share real life events in which one of these calibers was used to sucessfully kill? I know on paper there is a massive difference in them, but real life is far different.

Assuming you're not talking about animals, I don't think you're going to find anyone sharing stories of having killed someone. If you mean just news reports and things, all those calibers have often killed.

My great-grand father shot 2 robers in his shoe shop in 1915 with his colt vest pocket pistol (.25 ACP) both where really dead (didnt help the crooks that he shot 3 rounds at them and then walked around the counter and shot them both in the heads, but hell it was 1915.)

the 38 Sp. is a very respected SD round with the right ammo, so is the 380 as a backup gun.

My take if you will

While I can respect the OP question, be it for academic or of curious nature:

-Most folks are not going to talk about such things if personal.
Those that have been involved , including combat do not share, except with those of like kind, or similar.

-Information exists in various forms, and depending on credentials, to the level of information one can access.
Library, medical reports, autopsy, medical classes...etc.

-Being honest and candid, with recent DOS attacks, Political and Legal concerns we are all concerned with...

WE are very cautious with some Topics of discussions, and posted replies.

WE know there are Antis , Gun Control and Political / Legal leanings that read THR, we even know some are members and simply lurk , in hopes of finding something to use against us.
They may just disrupt a thread, or mis-quote one.

Please tread lightly on this thread please.

All of those calibers have successfully killed.

More people are killed with 22s than any other caliber because it's the caliber used most often in shootings.

Although any gun is better than no gun, most knowledgeable shooters would not choose less than a 380 for self-defense and many wouldn't feel good with that caliber.

para-frame- Your granddad's head shots probably didn't mean much. The 25 ACP generally won't penetrate the skull. Many years ago a local bouncer got shot by a bar patron he threw out. The 25 ACP slug entered through his lower lip, broke a tooth and lodged under his tongue. He was quite perturbed at being shot and beat the shooter half to death.

I've investigated cases and seen the people killed with all those calibers except the .38 ACP. Not sure what info you are looking for. The ones killed with the .25 were just as dead as the ones killed with the .380 and .38.

im just trying to see which of those calibers is going to do the job faster so to speak. And im interested in the old "back when i was doing foot patrol i remember a guy who beat his buddy to death an hour after the buddy shot him with 10 rounds of 25 acp" type of wsh.

As to my credentials, i just got what every tom dick and harry in the general public has after 5 years of college for drafting work, NADA.

ya but that is how he told the story.

38 ACP??? I don't think those were even popular in the 20s. I don't even know anyone who has ever had one.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind if you are selecting a handgun for defensive purposes.

First, handguns of any caliber from .22 short on up are capable of killing. But handguns of any caliber, loaded with any ammunition you can think of are poor fight stoppers. Why do we carry handguns? Because they are convenient. Because in our society it would be problematic at best to walk the streets and byways of America armed with an effective weapon. So we carry a handgun because it's better then no gun at all.

It's important that we understand this before we select what weapon to carry for defensive purposes. Once we accept the fact that no handgun is the equivalent of a Star Trek phaser, a plasma rifle in the 40 megawatt range or any other fictional death machine we can think of, we will be better prepared to make a choice of what handgun to carry.

It's generally accepted that with modern expanding ammunition, any reliable handgun in caliber .38 special or larger is adequate for defensive purposes. If you have unique concealment problems and still need to be armed, then you may want to opt for a smaller weapon, but you need to be aware that you are arming yourself with a weapon that is on the low end of the scale for it's ability to stop a fight and that nothing at the other end of that scale is very effective either.

Pick the handgun that fits you the best. It doesn't matter if it's a revolver or auto, 1911 or Glock, .38 spc, 9mm, .357, .41, .44 .45. All that matters is that it is as close to 100% reliable as possible and that you, not me, not an IPSC champ, not your next door neighbor, YOU can shoot it well and that it fits your lifestyle. The $3500 custom 1911 man killer with the brass knuckle trigger guard and the bayonet lug with the optional 16" sawtooth bayonet isn't going to serve you well sitting in your safe or on your night table because it's too bulky and heavy to lug around. You must be aware that you may have to modify how you dress to accommodate carrying your defensive weapon.

Once you have chosen the handgun that fits you and your normal manner of dress, invest in good professional training and a lot of ball ammo to practice with. It's software, not hardware that wins fights.

When you are familiar enough with your chosen weapon that everyone think you carried it from the womb, then you are ready to worry about picking defensive ammunition.

What it all boils down to, is that you will win or lose the fight, the tools you use are largely irrelevant.

Very true, Jeff. The whole key is choosing a caliber and platform that you feel comfortable with, become proficent with it, and pray most fervently that you will never be called on to use it.;)

Little confused

Maybe a better question would be information on people shot and not killed by the different calibers. If someone is shot dead it doesn't matter much what caliber, or type of bullet for that matter, was used. Anyway you may not get much of a response either way.

Well, not any kills, but an aquaintenance of mine negligently shot himself 2 times with a .25 acp in the index finger. In the index finger. Punctured and bruised but not broken as I recall.
The 1st shot suprised him plenty, and the 2nd shot hurt as bad as the 1st and was a reflexive shot. Kind of an uncontrolled double tap.
Good thing it wasn't a .38 hollowpoint or even a .22 hollowpoint for that matter.
Another friend of my older brother was allegedly unloading a .22 Sentinal Hi-Standard revolver and it went off pointed at his acchile's tendon and went through to his boot sole leaving a 1/2 dollar sized hole in the bottom of his arch. He was in need of a crutch for a few months and also had to go through a lot of physical therapy.

For every ".25 cal is a POS that won't bust a skull, break a bone, hit a barn sideways" story there are a pile of bodies in a morgue.

Any firearm is potentially deadly.

Your choice of calibers leads me to believe you are researching a 'period' piece of fiction. By far the 38 Special was more common in usage than any other caliber you listed--on both sides of the law though the early 70's.

I would rather stop a fight imediatly with a expanding self defensewithout killing an attacker than to shoot an attacker with a .22 to have him die from an infection a week later.

There are ads showing a 200 lb hog that was killed with one of those super velocity Gammo .177 pellet guns. Any gun has to be treated with total respect and handled safely. For self defense concealed carry, I would balance recoil, power of the round and your ability to shoot quickly and accurately. For me, 38 spl would be the lower limit and a heavy gun in 44 mag would be my upper limit. I have settled on .40 cal and 45 acp.
