hey I’m new to reloading and I’d like to reload .223 rounds but at a subsonic round would anyone be able to help me out on this thanks

I've heard it can be done with 4.4 gr of Trail Boss and a 55 gr bullet but I have no experience slowing them down that much. I was always trying to make them go faster with heavier bullets. It's unlikely you can get it to cycle an AR without a custom BCG.

I have not done this with.223 but I have downloaded 308 with trailboss powder made the 308 sound and recoil like a 22mag
You may want to research trailboss powder and it fills up the case fairly well

I saw some data a while ago on the Internet and write it down. Of course try to verify it for yourself, don't trust me or anyone else in the net. I would not intentionally try to hurt you but mistakes can and will happen. The data supposedly came directly from IMR but I have no way of knowing if that is true.

With a 55gr FMJ bullet:

4.0gr Trail Boss 1074fps (best)
3.2gr Clays 1060fps
3.1gr Titegroup 1064fps

With the advantage over .22LR being...?

CCI supressor is a 45gn pill. The Aquila SSS is 60 IIRC. Eley contact is 42gn at 1065 fps.

Unless you're have a stupid-fast twist barrel and are going for heavy-for-calibre bullets (70-90gn) which I wouldn't expect to stabilise at low speed, I don't see the point in doing more work, spending more money, for equal ballistics?

I must preface this with "It's outside the manual and you might die"

But if you're not an idiot you probably wont. You can down-load ANY powder. I have a 220gn .308 subsonic Varget load.
You are BETTER doing it with FASTER powders.
Given the option, pick the fastest powder listed in your load manual. Work out "Grains/ FPS". Ideally you'll have worked up a load with a ladder test to confirm/verify the Gn/FPS in your gun.
Calculate the load for about 1150 FPS and load down in your .2gn increments and do a reverse-ladder WITHOUT A SUPRESSOR. STARTING HIGH and WORKING DOWN until you crack 1060.
Draw a star on the ground with the blood of a chicken, face north and pray that it's an accuracy node.

If your bullet doesn't show up on target STOP and CHECK THE BARREL IS CLEAR (See pt 1 about "not being an idiot")
If your bullets are keyholing DO NOT shoot through a supressor.

If you're lucky that will stabilise an 80gn. But quite possibly only going fast, 2100fps (absolute guess) or more.
68-69gn are the "sweet" bullets in 223. IF you can get them to shoot.

Consider that .22lr (who's ballistics your matching) are 1:14, 1:16 or slower.

Some people use 22 caliber pellets in 223 cases with a primer. Some folks drill the case out to take a shotgun primer.
